Apology if this has been asked hundreds of times before, but I need some advice regarding a set of gates I’m building.
I have realised that the length of 100x100x4 steel I have bought (and now cut) for a pair of gateposts may not be strong enough for my plans.
The gates won't be massive - 1.5 x 1.4m and made out of 50x50x3 with hollow composite infill. I estimate that each gate will weigh no more than about 60kg.
My plan is to reinforce the posts where the hinge brackets will be using 100x100x6mm plate welded on, but I'm a little concerned that the posts might flex. There will be about 1.6m out of the ground (I’m not worried about the depth of the holes etc) but did wonder about filling the post with concrete (and a couple of reinforcing rods) to reduce / prevent flexing.
Is this a sensible idea? I really don't want / can't afford to buy more steel.
