Gate problem

I need to make and fit a 3' wide gate in a gap between a building and a 6' wooden fence, belonging to a neighbouring property. The gate prevents access to a doorway.

The main problem is that under the pathway running along the fence is a gas main, so i think this rules out digging a hole to put a post in next to the fence.

The gate can be fixed to the building, but it's a way to lock it that is proving tricky.

I was wondering if anyone has come across this sort of problem before or if anybody might have any suggestions.

frame it over the top with piece of flat bar across the bottom?

If it's plastic its amazing how they can bend!
I would dig down to find it. You may be able to sneak a post down the side of it.

Can you not move the gate back enough so you can fix the lock to a post?
If not, is the bit of pathway easy to dig/patch? Bit of carefull digging...

I take it the gate is to be hinged on a wall-post on the wall (using 120mm hammer fixers). You just need to make a closing post to fix into the fence. This can be sat in shallow concrete and screwed to the fence as it isn't load bearing. Gas pipe should be 24 inches down anyway.

I did say 'should' !!!. Best to dig down very carefully! Best one I ever saw was a copper pipe from an oil tank protected by turf. Those fence posts have been in nearly 15 years now and show no sign of rotting!

I think i might go with the careful shallow digging and just use a plate with about a 2" tube welded in the centre to recieve some sort of lockable drop bolt.

It doesn't need to be high security...it's only to stop people pi!!ing and vomiting in the doorway on their way home from the pub.
