just visited my local builders merchant & collected a rare bargain ,if anyones within travelling distance of hay-on-wye ;9" square softwood posts 2.5m long @ £7.70 +vat! i haven't stated the name as i think its forbidden here but its a small place so their yard can easily be found.

Think I spotted them there today - just inside the gates on the right? Cheap enough but then I doubt there is a huge market for softwood gate posts treated or not they won't last long - and they looked to be a bit to rough to be much use for anything else.

the very ones,i'm gonna give one a go-leave it soaking in a bucket of waste oil,we've got one in the field thats been there 26 + years still ok.

Yep and they'll be absolutely saturated in tar, pitch, creosote or whatever other long since banned preservative. A few years ago we had to replace a couple of 12" square softwood posts that my grandfather had and supplied them 10 years previously. He said at the time they wouldn't last in the ground even with a few coats of creosote (back when it was real creosote not the crap you get now) and that they'd be better off spending more on hardwood posts - he was right the thing rotted from the middle out and eventually went so soft the through hinge pins pulled through.

Still for the price you can't go far wrong with the above - you'd get a lot of softwood posts for the price of one hardwood one you'd still be quids in if you had to replace them every 10 years for the next century.

u can still buy proper coal tar creosote ive just bought 10 gallons its only suposed to be sold to professionals im an electrician so im a professional

Its especially good for annoying the neighbours ,apply it to your garden fence ,the aroma will keep them inside for a good two weeks
