I would bury them 600 in the ground. If there is a lot of weight on the post (A particulary ornate gate or a bi-fold where all the weight is on one post, i would normally use a thicker wall box section and usually weld some flat bar feet to the bottom of the post to give extra stability.
When you start on digging the hole thoughts cross your mind like wonder if i could get away with 500...400...300 etc!! Especially if digging in hard ground!!
I have some very large and heavy galvanised palisade gates - 3 metre square each side. I need to have some posts made up with pins welded to them. I am guessing from the above that I maybe ought to be looking at 4.5 metre posts (suggestions on diameter) with some form of flat bar across the bottom. Is there anyone out there who would like to be paid to make the first two of these for me?
