gassles wire in gas mig

hi ive been using gassles wire in my cosmo/gas mig [not the gas/gasles model] is there any modifications i should have done b4 using the gasless wire as i find it doesnt weld as good without the argon attached but at 10 pound a whip for argon that lasts 10 mins in each bottle its just too expensive

Is it real gasless wire (normally grey in colour) and not normal wire (copper coloured) being used without gas? Normal wire wouldn't weld properly without argon mix.

Gasless welders normally run on the opposite polarity to welders used with shielding gas. Gasless might work on the wrong polarity if you aren't fussy about the welds, though I've not tried that on a SIP so that could well be the problem.

Might be worth finding one of the cheaper gas suppliers from the gas supplier list in the shielding gas section - much cheaper than disposables.

its proper gassless wire the welds arnt as good as when using gas but it still welds/penetrates im using it on a van bodywork ect ,i was wondering if theres any mods i can do to change the polarity? its a gas welder it doesnt say gasless on it and only has 2 high/low switches ? thanks malcolm ,its this welder but without the gassles switch on it http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/other-products/cosmo-130-turbo-gas-gasless-mig-welder.asp

You'll find it wouldn't weld as nicely even with the correct polarity. Modifying the welder to work the other way around might be a pain. If it were me I'd look at picking a gas & gasless welder and upgrading to a Clarke or something at the same time.

Failing that, are you using some nasty DIY store gasless wire? Maybe from Aldi or Halfords? A member recently reported changing to something almost branded improved things a lot (and didn't cost any more). I've organised some SIF gasless wire for an experiment but haven't tried it yet.

Halfords around here sell SIP MIG wire, Is that not a good make?

You had me worried there!
My last roll of wire came from a dumped MIG welder in the local recycling A 5KG roll of .8 seems to work fine but i was looking at the SIP stuff in Halfords for the next.

I've a couple of rolls of SIP's wire I use for odd outdoor jobs, never had any issues with it.
