Gasket sealant

Hi

I am needing some gasket sealant. I was just going to go for the normal stuff I use hylomar blue. I was wondering people's views and if there is anything better or just stick with that?

Often depends what you are using it on, for general use on paper gaskets I too would go with hylomar blue.
Some applications specify RTV silicone, for others like core plugs in cylinder blocks
I use a loctite, for car/ bike applications I usually check what the workshop manual specifies and decide from there what best to use.

whats it for and did the factory use sealant? ...i hate seeing huge gobs of blue silicone squeezed out of gaskets , often finds its way into the oil strainer

Exactly. Seeing it in an oil pump strainer certainly puts you off the stuff.

I use a selection depending on application but generally RTV or Blue Hylomar.

Also hate seeing globs of the stuff poking out from gaskets so have Blue Hylomar in an aerosol can so you can put a thin coating on with no globs

There's a variety of excellent gooey stuff, but although they're mostly able to do most things some are much more suited to certain jobs. So, give details of the job.

Thanks for all the reply. It is for the large flat bit of metal that the drain plug is on at the back of land rover transmission.

So I don't think it would be caring a massive amounts of heat.correct me if I am wrong.

Is this this on the transfer box?

IIRC pre TD5 had a paper gasket, TD5 on used RTV and no gasket

Hylomar is great gear, I also use the loctite sealant too and have found that to be just as good and in some cases better

With clean flat faces & a paper, gasket grease is all you should need.
Years ago I stripped a BDA that had ran a big end then put the rod through the block.
The pickup pipe gauze was blocked with Hylomar.
For face, to face alloy either good grade, RTV or a sealant called "Well Seal"
We used to call the bright orange RTV fools gold lol

just sealed my new grit valve faces together without a gasket using hylomar I sometimes use silicone and it stands 120 psi pressure

The big sump made from sheet metal? Originally used a cork or thick paper gasket?

If so, my choice would be RTV with no gasket, followed by an oiled cork gasket or a paper one with a light coating of blue hylomar to both sides. Don't do the bolts up silly tight.
Follow the instructions regarding allowing RTV one hour to cure before tightening.

Although the original was cork my recommendation here is RTV, in my opinion it's superior to paper and cork and these sump plates easily warp, which RTV will handle.
Apply the bead and put the nuts on, but do NOT go further than finger tight. Leave for one hour then tighten.
Basically you want the silicone to fill all the gaps and shape itself to the warped sump, when it's starting to appear at the sides of the joint stop tightening. Then once it has cured a bit you apply pressure to seal it for good.

It's quite easy to remove/clean if you ever have to go in there again.

Chances are it'll be the only leak free part of the vehicle!

Hylomar blue is fantastic stuff on paper gaskets. Problems with globs breaking loose are from too much being lathered on - any sealant will squeeze out if used wrongly - or where it's gone off. It never sets or loses the sealing properties however the solvent does evaporate if tubes are not used up quickly enough. This makes it much harder to spread thinly.

I have never found success sealing threads which hold pressure, and I don't use it in place of a gasket only to dress one.
For no gasket where RTV is too thick loctite flange sealant (or cheaper equivalent) is brilliant. I have recently repaired a compressor and used this to avoid spending time making paper gaskets and dressing with hylomar. The zero thickness of the sealant has raised the compression ratio and made it considerably more efficient. Does require the belt to be tight to drive it now though!

Been a lifelong proponent of Hylomar Blue. The mistake most people make with it is put too much on and it squidges out, only a smear is needed.
