Gasket material

Another question for the collective I'm currently doing a cosmetic restoration of a Petter A1 engine so have had to remove various covers etc. as part of the prep. I want to make some new gaskets but identifying the material has thrown up lots of different material with various specs I sometimes don't understand.
They seem to be some sort of compressed fibrous material with a shiny finish and measure 0.72 - 0.75mm thick ( after 50+ years of being compressed) and only have to seal against oil splash.

I make my own gaskets. I brought a big roll off eBay. Oil and petrol resident and it's a good thickness. I done everything from rocker covers to gearbox gaskets. I can find the make if you need

if so they look to be standard(ish) flexoid type gasket paper, which is oil, fuel and heat resistant, and can be bought cheaply enough off ebay off the roll

Try asking at your local bearing stockist, our local one in Sheffield stocks various gasket materials/thickness/widths in rolls.

I make my own gaskets. I brought a big roll off eBay. Oil and petrol resident and it's a good thickness. I done everything from rocker covers to gearbox gaskets. I can find the make if you need

I bought one of those, but it only has one out of the 4 gaskets I need and that one is the wrong material

That looks like a CAF gasket to me, compressed asbestos fibre, if it is should be replaced with CNAF compressed non asbestos fibre, any good engineering supplies place will have it.

You can get grahite type gasket material, but does cause flange face corrossion on some materials.

That looks like a CAF gasket to me, compressed asbestos fibre, if it is should be replaced with CNAF compressed non asbestos fibre, any good engineering supplies place will have it.

Also some of the graphite type stuff, and the asbesto replacments have like a mesh in the middle to make it stronger, for high pressure stuff.

Good quality paper as used to make ships charts, with a smear of grease works for many things, as does the cerial box, gasket paper is also available in certain thickness, many universal lorry parts places sell it.

From memory the graphite stuff can cause corrosion pitting on flange faces in stainless and super duplex

Be careful with those old ones - probably be asbestos.

I have several offcuts of what looks like the exact stuff, what size would you need?...will check tomorrow and if I have it will drop it in the post.

That would be great if you have enough thanks , the 2 main ones are 5" diameter, I also have to make a 6" square one and a 4"x2" one, but could probably get by on those with paper/card if necessary.

Will have a look in the morning...think I have a few bits, they used it in the nuclear industry so don't worry (too much) if it glows in the dark or the end of your fingers go a tad black.

In the steam game you can still get asbestos gaskets
They are called "Heratage" now lol
