With grinding I agree that a good clean prep is just as important as the weld in making a nice job.
At the risk of stating the obvious though, grinding will reduce the allready thin steel on a vehicle,I tend to use a wire wheel or 3m surface conditioning disk which cleans the area perfectly but with no sparks therefore retaining the thickness of the parent metal. Hope this helps.
