Gas welding "Thing"

As some of you know I got this 1942 RN Gas Welding and Cutting set. It is in need of some TLC.


I can work out what most parts are. If you want to throw more knowlage at the parts etc, feel free.


But what is this for?

Running two oxygen cylinders at the same time to reduce the number of swaps?

So why one for oxygen in the kit, not one for the other gas?

What's the copper coil for?

Maybe the coil is to allow for a bit of movement without having an actual flexible hose involved, in the same way as some very old brake pipes had a coil for the same reason ?

What's the copper coil for?

Accommodating movement between the two connected cylinders. The contraption could also also be used to fill one cylinder from another e.g. a portable oxy gas welding pack.

you use a lot more volume of oxygen that acetylene or propane for cutting and heating. probs copper will be more flexible than steel when conecting the regs at a rough guess

I think that once the cut starts, in principle, you could turn off the fuel gas and just continue with the oxy.

I think it is called a manifold.

You could measure the centre-to-centre distance of the two-bottle attachment and see how that relates to the diameter of a cylinder (acetylene bottles are not the same diameter as oxygen and also left hand thread).

There is a strange looking bulge in the neck of the bent torch. Does that look intentional or has someone wrinkled it?

When cutting or gouging you’ll use loads more oxygen than acetylene.

Exactly that! We used to do that all the time.

Oxygen lance = gas free cutting. Exothermic.

I'd think its for linking 2 cylinders to allow some high flow rates for cutting serious stuff.

'cos it's probably mainly for cutting, once the fuel gas has got the metal hot enough the oxygen burns the metal and the fuel gas is no longer needed until you have to do a stop then restart. Hence you use far more oxygen than fuel gas (acetylene or propane)
