Gas torch issues

following from an earlier thread, I've gone and bought a gas torch from the bay, said it would work with butane!!

After having suplied and fitted my own reg the flame output is next to useless. The reg is a proper calor gas unit, of the push on and twist the black button style, commonly found on camping equipment.

Out put on the reg is 28 millibar. Can I get a similar reg with higher gas output to allow the torch to work properly

If not whole project is a waste of money as I've cut off the rubbish that was supplied, not the best 16 quid I've ever spent!!!

And yes before you say I can get it to work with propane but have one already dedicated for that purpose

for normal low pressure applications eg camping stoves, butane runs a 28 millibar pressure and propane runs at 37 millibar

I was using an old Saffire Oxy Acet welding torch with regulated oxygen and a Gamping Gas cylinder with no regulator. Worked fine. Prob not Elf & Safety acceptable.....
Around here they sell special adjustable regulators for weed burning torches at around €17, up to something like two bar. Going to update my brazing kit with one of those and for the cutting torch.

I have 'modded' butane regs in the past, on the older types you prise off the aluminium disc and screw in the small screw found underneath to the required pressure.

28mb is like a small fart, I haven't done any LPG work for over 6 years so the gears may be a little slow, but I thought butane was much higher than that?

The torch as supplied was supposed to connect to a 4.5 kg butane cylinder without a reg. suspect ion this to be highly dangerous and with my day job of H&S I elected to fit a rev which allowed a flame but not one that was any good to me.

Now I'm properly hacked off as torch doesn't work like advertised. I can't return it as I've cut the stupid nut off the hose to fit a regulator that I've supplied and to top it off eblag won't allow me to leave neutral or negative feedback

Whole thing is just a pants experience!!!

I have just found a reg that will do the trick though!!

I got a few propane torches but I wanted a butane torch as I have lots of butane cylinders which are mostly full and no good to me. With a torch I can use the butane to light my BBQ a few times a week. What a crap eblag experience.

I've seen the Reg you suggest and gonna buy as I'm not going to give up on this

Can't you modify the one you have?

you may be able to get away without a regulator, as butane pressure is much lower than propane for a given temperature.

I used to know someone who has the same sievert blowtorch as me, and they used to run it on propane without a regulator

Check the size, this one http://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/LPG_Kosan_0-2_Bar_High_Pressure_Butane_Gas_Regulator.html states a 35mm clip, clip-on butane regs come in several sizes, I suspect your bottles may be 20/21 mm

Yep all my bottles are 21mm this seems to be the standard size for regular bottles

I've seen this one, how do I make it fit on a 21mm jobbie

I would say you don't. There must be something out there that will do.

IIRC Calor are 21mm and Shell 20mm - just to stop you swapping different supplier's regs between competitor's bottles!

To be honest the best (safest) option might be to get a gas ring and use the free gas to cook on.

Agreed and I have one of those, it would have been better if the gas torch worked out.

Lesson learnt is never trust ebay? Sad thing is some of the nozzles don't fit properly on the torch and description was less than accurate plus I can't leave negative feed back to a power seller!!!

The whole thing has been a disaster

Can you post a picture of your butane regulator, I should be able to see if you can modify it to increase the output pressure.

Does the nylon disc unscrew, you need to reduce the spring pressure to increase the torch pressure. Mine had a screw in that I could wind out to reduce the spring pressure.

The nylon disc has a spring below it, I will have a look in the morning as I've had a few drinks tonight.

This was an original calor gas reg, I've got another three or four more that I can tinker with if need be
