That's what it's like with the new struts. If I stand too close I'll get knocked unconscious!

Bolt a small anvil to lid and use as joke handle ?

As said, get an adjustable one/set. i have used them many a time for doors and lids etc. easy to setup.

Use only one?

Unscrew the ball joint fitting on the body - under it may be a socket head screw or even a shrader type valve to allow you to vent pressure - but only a let a tiny amount out - very easy to let too much.

I've used bathroom scales to measure car spring rates, but not sure what happens if you try it with a constant force gas strut.
