Gas Pressure

I have ordered the pea-shooter type flow meter with rubber end, so I can check flow rate at the torch.

What sort of pressure should I set on the regulator?

If I have a reg mounted flow controller/meter then that will set the flow rate irrespective of pressure ( I think ) ( assuming enough pressure to sustain the flow through the system )

Would 7 psi or so be a starting point?

Its just to avoid wasting the precious gas on initial set ups

I will be welding stainless, with pure Argon and red tungstens.

normally, you set it up for LPM (litres per minute) on a flow meter, this is because you measure the flow of gas though the in your case pea shooter meter.

the pressure is normally the cylinder pressure and you should always open the valve on the botttle fully, my BOC bottles are pressurised up to 240 bar which as you an immagine at about 14psi per bar is slightly higher then 7psi...

what you want to do is set your flow meter to about 7lpm (normally a good starting point)

also some regulators have a display so you can see the flowrate aswell as pressure... (most ive seen do) just open the regulator untill it indicates the correct level. if your regulator doesnt have any guauges then open the regulator a little bit at a time untill you get 7lpm at your torch.

It will work fine opening it a quarter to half a turn, and it's easier to turn off quickly in an emergency.

On most twin gauge regs I have seen, one shows cylinder pressure ( often just colour coded as opposed to Bar/Psi. The second gauge is the outflow pressure as set by the adjustable regulator. They tend to be calibrated in Bar/Psi and usually go up to 100 PSI.

Its is this pressure ( outlet to the Tig set ) I am talking about

Adjust the outlet pressure by winding in the pressure adjustment screw until you are registering 7 litres per minute on the "pea shooter" stuck on the end of your TIG torch

Inside I run around 5lpm (tig) outside in the wind....another matter..... I got an argosaver the other week stops the surge of gas at the torch you know what it actually works! Dial your max required output at the reg, then set the saver for max psi ever required too maybe a little less, then dial the required lpm at the flow meter, now no gas surge and required lpm... saves gas...

Does anyone have the gas pressure wander upwards when welding? I was tigging the other week at around 7-9 Lpm then when I finished what I was doing the reg was showing 15LPM. Soon after I ran out of gas. Have another 200bar bottle to do a project next week but was wondering if this is usual or have I got a dodgy reg?

If it's a single stage reg the output increases as the cylinder pressure drops

i have a single stage regulator and a flow meter on the side of that but always check with the pea shooter every time i start welding.
and i have noticed it rises a bit.
