Gas Leak!

Hi All, folks had a smell of gas last night and the good neighbours got the emergency gas peeps out to make safe. They have cover for all but gas..My dad has had strokes and can't explain anything to me and mum has not got a scooby but I know they are with EDF paying for supply.

Can a gas fitter out of the trade book be used to detect / turn back on and repair or do I need to go through EDF or transco or BG????

I'm hoping it's just there ancient gas cooker but could be anything

They just make safe, you need a gas safe registered engineer to trace and repair and then reinstate the supply

my mother lived with me the last 3 years of her life.....

They disconnect the gas by unscrewing the brass nut on the pipe into the gas meter,putting in a rubberised metal disc and tightening it all up again.
They'll try to do this when nobody's looking,so you'll not take it back out when they've gone..

Cheers Frank, I lost my sister last year, I know what you mean about missing them, still keeping thinking I'll give her a ring for a chat, even miss that. The folks are a big overhead but will miss them massively, miss my dad now tbh.

I had a pillock that had been on the 4 day course change the gas meter last Christmas on a Saturday wife rang up to say he fitted new meter but put a cap in because she said it smelt of gasyea the washers on the old one not the new one he put a card on saying it has to be checked by a competent person so I connected it back up . bloody house was freezing . a quick check with a manometer and it was fine he rang up later that evening and said he felt bad about disconnecting it . and wanted to retest on sunday ok you can but I already connected and tested it he came back took the measurement and it was fine . so whats the problem ???well your missus smelt gas so im obliged to cut it off . yes the old meter he went out on the phone to phone a friend for advice I looked in cupboard and wife said leave it closed hese testing it for god sake its within limit I just said look mate its fine il get me mate to come round tomorrow and test agan if your so worried . i get called out regular for water damage on wiring and have to make decision whether to reconnect or not as it will dry out .different to gas but there is a bit of flexibility without jeopardising my job and safety

Put a fan on to blow the smell out, we had to when the new meter was fitted, it's just residual stink.

Funny you should say that.
The outfit that I rang, the guy called me after doing checks at the house..
No gas leak mate, well within limits, had a chat with your mum and it sounds like the carers who were round last night caused the flap, looks to me that your mum did not turn the hob knob all the way off, emergency call out must have had a brain fart not to sus that! - I'm going to leave it all reconnected if ok with you? - bloody right! - Words to be had with the old dear me thinks...
