Gas lamps

Occasionally I wander through Green Park in London in the evening. This time of year, the beauty of the original gas lamps and their little glowing mantles always pleases me. The light is so different to the common electric lighting, in a similar way to my recent thread on paraffin lamps.

This got me to thinking that I would like some external lights at home. If I could put up a line of gas lamps, that would be perfect but probably impractical and expensive. Are there any electric alternatives that can be made to look like these lovely old lights and also give off a soft atmospheric glow?

They do look very nice when lit. Years ago the gas board sold gas fed wall lights for inside your house, fed from small dia capillary tubing, A friend a couple of doors away from me had a couple, one each side of his fireplace.

I still have a few portable gas lights - Grandfather used to work for the gas board and had a number of gas lamps they could use when working out and about.
