Gas issue

I bought a new bottle of gas from halfords, I used the welder for a few mind welding sone legs on my burner. I turned the welder off put it back in cupboard and could hear the gas coming out so turned the bottle off on the reg. I came to use the welder last night and the welds were splatting everywhere I dicovered the gas bottle was empty ????? Were should I be looking the cause

I think you've answered your own question.

These bottles are notorious for leaking once a regulator has been fitted and are outrageously expensive to use.

You will be much better in the long term looking for a non-rental deal from a local gas supplier.

I've never used the small cylinders but a friend of mine who does always removes the regulator when he stops welding so it closes the valve. I doubt if they would refund you on a cylinder once it's out of the shop as you could use one up in an hour anyway.

You can use the Ar/CO2 cans up in about 6-10 minutes of use. If they lasted an hour, they might actually be worth while.


The CO2 cans last considerably longer, at least half an hour.

i really cant imagine why these small bottles are still sold they are of no real use and you pay for the pleasure, when they were invented what did the inventor have in mind welding dinky cars.
imagine trying to weld in a breezy location 4 inches of weld to do, tacked in place no gas left

At 10l/min that is 0.1 minutes or 6 minutes. The disposable regs usually don't allow a good flow, maybe 6-8lpm, so that is 10 down to 7.5 minutes.

The CO2 is 600g or 303L. So, at 10LPM it is 30.3 minutes, at 7.5 LPM it is near 40 minutes of use.

Would be worth trying it before investing in a pub bottle.

With respect, that sounds like absolute tosh...

The disposable bottles (sold by Machine Mart and the like) typically hold up to 110 litres of gas (it's under compression).

If they held just one litre, then they'd discharge in six seconds (assuming a rate of 10l/min). In reality, a single disposable bottle will last for around 11 minutes of continuous welding.

I think some C02 disposable bottles are gas rather than liquid, so definitely go for the latter.

The Argon bottle says "60 litres", "60 bar @ 20 degC", "950 cc."

The 60 litres will be at atmospheric pressure, the 950cc is the volume of the bottle.

Yep, quite agree.... 950cc of liquid which will expand to a far greater volume of gas at atmospheric pressure.

The other posters' points stand, though - my current project has consumed around £80 worth of disposable bottles so far, and they're starting to accumulate in the corner of the garage.

Does anyone know the best way to dispose of them safely without earning a ticking off from the local council?)
