Gas Forge Burner

I ham looking at building a gas forge/furnace. I have a lot of brass to melt and need something up to the job, I have a couple of crucibles and a stainless barrel with which to make the actual body of the furnace, I can easily fabricate a lid it is the burner I am looking for, there are literally dozens on ebay and Amazon to choose from, does anyone have any recommendations?

I have no personal experience but it cannot really be that hard and I will build the forge/furnace myself.

Does it have to be gas? I have a big oil burner from a schools central heating system, thats yours for the postage
Almost stripped it and weighed the brass in the other month... its old but i belive it still runs

Bit of a tale really, I took 55 kilos of fired brass cartridges to the scrap man nearby just before Christmas and they gave me £13.75p Yes, I know I wrote to them saying Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask at least.

Gone already, too late. They do not enjoy the best reputation around here but we had been getting along.
Pretty ticked off about it to be honest.

I would have asked if they had the decimal place wrong, they pay about £3 a kilo round here.

My dad has two, can't remember who by, it the guy that builds them commercially i'm pretty sure, i'll try and look the up.

He may be interested in selling one of them, he has only used one in his furnace and it's more than powerful enough.

I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve got most of the bits bar the burner.

There’s several builds on YouTube which just use pipe fittings and a mig tip for the nozzle which I am tempted to try.

The only bit perculiar to the build is the Venturi (they call it something else on forges) which you can buy off Amazon etc ready threaded for pipe.

Shame Amazon don’t sell roundtuits otherwise mine would have been build ages ago…….

Would one of the amal burners work? They seem to get a good rep on the blacksmith pages.

For melting Brass, the temperatures are quite readily achievable with a pretty basic burner design: with Naturally Aspirated burners, it's probably fair to say that the tighter the temperature needs to be held, the tighter the manufacturing tolerances need to be.

Effectively, any of the proven online burner designs should work reasonably well for your application, so long as you don't make a complete Horlicks of building it.

Northwest, If it's instant gratification you want/need, I'm pretty sure I have both 1/2" and 3/4" Amal atmospheric injectors doing nothing at the moment beyond cluttering up my shed. I also have more than ample surplus 1" Ceramic Fibre blanket. If you'd like to do a trial and either return or replace the Amal injector once you've decided whether it's for you, I'm sure we can get the bits into your hands pretty quickly (I'm in Darwen).

I don't think you need a particularly good burner, but those based on the Amal injectors are, IMO/E, the best you'll find.

I’m sure Kent made his own burner for his forge. I’ve seen it, so there must be a video of it somewhere as I’ve never been to his workshop. I’ll check his FB

I weighed in some heavy brass last week at my favourite scrappy and achieved £2.88 per kg for
old taps mixers and always cut the fittings of the copper pipe for a better price , I think they robbed you @northwest .

Thank you for your kind offer and with recent price hikes I would likely have been ahead of the game, But I need a smelting furnace really, not a forge for iron working.

I weighed in 61kg of brass at the end of October. Most of it was chrome plated taps. £3.5k / tonne. Got £213.50.
