Gas bottles

does anyone know the type of steel used to manufacture propane and butane gas bottles.
Typically the 13/16kg ones but I’m assuming they are all made the same.
The steel is easily worked but it welds very differently to mild with stick welder.

Didn’t know they are galvanised.
I do take them down to bare steel with flap wheel before welding.
Done a couple and adding a bit of mild to them is not the easiest job I’ve done.
Always seems difficult to get some heat into the metal compared to the mild I’m welding to it.

You will see as you flap wheel, Paint comes off first then look carefully there is a layer of galv, I had trouble a few times, main galvanising removed but the metal was quite pitted and some galv remained in the pits. grind until its down to just the steel and no pits and it should weld fine,

Will take a closer look. I’m assuming the guard and base are not galvanised going by the rust build up.

They are all mild steel

Years ago I did some work with calor gas where bottles are repaired. Good old fashioned metal bashing. Nothing fancy

Never noticed any difference and I've made loads of stoves, chimneas, fire bowls, BBQ's.

I always burn off the galvanising in a bonfire a few at a time after they are cut open. I don't fancy toxic grinding dust everywhere.

My first bottle jobs were OK after removing the galv (flap wheel and mask) using my lincoln or EWM mig, Tried another same method and it welded cr@p. using the Kemppi 180, this machine didn't like the pits filled with galv at all, The zinc boiling off upset it no end, Go Figure,

It's the fumes from the galv that are toxic the dust is just as bad as steel your grinding, the aluminium oxide coming off the flap disk is probably the worst for your health just wear a dust mask if your worried.

Calor Gas have a huge depot at Stony Stanton, I’ve done a glhuge amount of work there looking at various H&S issues. All bottles are mild steel.
