hello all,

I am in the process of making a patio heater from an old gas bottle at the moment but I am having trouble sourcing a chimney.

Could I get something like this and just weld it to the top of the bottle?

There is a speed cam one just south of Soutra Hill on the A68, someone torched it, so the scorched vert pole that is left will have that already used look.

Has been replaced last month they stole the one 2 miles further down the A68 closer to Lauder last year someone must have had a flatbed with highab or JCB to lift it out took the whole lot.These god damn pikeys are getting more daring.

Try the scrap yard 4 inch will be suffice or larger whatever he has lying around a piece of spiral from a ventilation shop would also do.

while I'm here, what would be the optimum length for the flue, say compared to the bottle (furnace) height?

Would it be better at twice the height, less, more, etc?

I am still having real trouble finding a chimney. Today I went to two scrap yards and neither had anything suitable. I then drove for about an hour to a salvage yard which wasn't there!! (there was just an empty lot).

So I am now scouring ebay for something cheap. I really don't want to pay much as this is supposed to be free (or thereabouts).

Today I did manage to cut out the door and weld the a hinge (one I found in my neighbours overgrown garden) on. But that's about it for my little wood burner.

Have you tried a ventilation shop yet? galv spiral will last a few years a 3mtr length will cost not much more than £20/£25 dont quote me on that have not bought any for a while, I bought some three years ago and that was only £12.

I can get 5" Vitreous Enamel Plain Flue Pipe 600MM for £25 on ebay. That seems OK. More than I wanted to spend but it's not too bad.

I presume I can grind off the enamel and weld the pipe to the top of the bottle?

I'd weld a spigot to the stove and slip the flue over it. This will make it easier to change the flue in future.

I think that's a bit above my level of manufacturing/welding.

It only needs to be a bit of pipe about 6 inches high. If you can get some the same thickness of the bottle it would be a lot easier to weld than a thinner flue.

At 600 high you will be sitting in the smoke and end up smelling like a kipper. Get something well above the height of peoples head.

Would there be an issue with fumes (it going to be in the garden at all times)?

Bingo! collect your tin badge thats the spiral I have been telling you about a crowd I did work for used it, it lasted a couple of years and they were burning mdf by the tone load. if it lasted them a couple of years it will last a lot longer for your application. Now all you need is a spigot to weld to the bottle.
