gas bottle valves

need to get the valves and taps off my gas bottles. Ive had spanner and bar on them, tried with a mallet too and none of them are budging at all.

the last one i took off came off easy enough.

are they right hand thread in the bottle and how can i loosen them off, ive bent 2 spanners already and split a bit of 30mm pipe trying to get them off

Brass valves? Last couple I removed were with a hacksaw flush to the top of the cylinder, then drilled out as they were solid.

Only took about 10 minutes per cylinder in the end.

problem with that is that all the handles are welded on, no space for a hacksaw, in sure that's hoe i got the last one off

thought so. Never tried one on anything other than steel.

i can use a hacksaw on 3 out of the 11 bottles. The others just aren't giving up. Ive just had a length of solid inch square bar on it acting ad a punch to knock it around and its just bending the valves now. Spanners are bending, mole grips just twist off, stilsons the same

I have removed a few tight ones,Usually use a nice stout drift about 1" diameter and a foot long,Then a few really good whacks with a lump hammer get the job done,Easier if you can remove the protective shroud first to give better access for you to drive the valve round. Normal right hand thread.

Pussy. Buying better spanners sounds like it may be the first step. Never had a spanner bend on me yet when removing a valve. If you need to cut them off, just use a hacksaw blade. Wrap some insulation tape around the part you're holding if you have girlie hands. Else, length of rod against the sticky out part of the valve and whack it with the hammer. Standard RH thread.

i was using the back up spanners, didn't want to risk using the good uns lol.

ive decided i don't need the valves so i will cut them off.

Simplest way usually is to put a good, tight fit spanner on there, sticking out of one of the handle holes, (if they haven't aligned the valve in such a way that you can't get to it from behind through one of the holes), and give that a single sound whack with a heavy mallet. It'll usually give it enough of a jar to remove the valve with the spanner by hand. It will likely still need some heavy grunt, but it'll come. Either that or I have ape-like strength.

Remember that you're working with brass valves. The brass will give before a good spanner will, so you'd have to be a real thug to knack a good spanner on them.

well its dark now so ive opened a bud. In the morning i am going to dig out my bolster and smack the living **** out of them.

i no longer want to keep any of the valves so they will either twist out or shear off and get drilled.

what size thread are they. Am i right in thinking they are half inch bsp?

Ive taken them out with a big pair of stilsons. Thread was standard 3/4 BSP, right hand.

as gordon suggests cut the protective ring off first angle grinder with slitting disk . a 2and a half pound hammer and four or 5 hard bats on the side of the valve where the bullnose threads in to and they come out no bother every time . they dont snap just buckle in a bit at the side

I always cut the handle, off grip the base in my vice, then if my spanner doesn't do it I use a large pair of stilsons and scaffold pole

I normally cut off the shroud protects ting the valve, giving freer access all the way round then use a spanner with bar attached, works every time. You may need an assistant with a big crow bar jammed into the base ring hole if there is one to provide counter leverage

If you've got a few to do wrecks a spanner tho. Cut the head off spanner weld on long 1/2" drive extension bar, 90' to spanner head and use the breaker bar. Now you have a special gas bottle valve spanner if you need it again
