Gas bottle fill pressure

I have a gas bottle for my welder and it is supposed to be an argon co2 mix, but a friend said he thought it was pure co2.

We then proceded to check the bottle pressure on the regulator which said 230 bar. He said that it could not be co2 as it would have been more likely to have a fill pressure of around 80 bar and that if the bottle had been filled to that pressure (230) of co2 it would be so heavy that i could not lift it myself. I told him that i had handled the bottle onto the shelf my self quite easily.

The regulator leaks a little around the clocks and I forgot to turn it off last night and this morning it was sitting at 200 bar

How would I be able to tell if it was co2 or argon mix?

CO2 will have a pressure between 60 and 70 bar regardless of how full it is.

My CO2 tank is 2 years old and I have used it often, The pressure has not changed. The pressure is set by the liquid vapor pressure and varies only with temperature.

Only when all the liquid is gone will the pressure drop.

CO2 is filled as a liquid so the pressure is lower as the gas vapourising gives the cylinder pressure. Argon is gas under pressure and gives the higher reading. CO2 is measured by weight of liquid.

So there is no chance that it could be co2 then. Well thats a releif! Thought I was robbed

Is there any chance then it could be some sort of exotic mix of gas? Or pure argon, then I could get a shot at tig! Maybe I should try and master the art of mig first!

Seriously though is there any way of telling what mix of gas it would be?
