Gas Bottle disposal

The blue cylinders are probably medical nitrous oxide - some questions at the mo in Parliament about making posession illegal! Coincidentally I pulled in at a layby today (the death of the Public Convenience has put bushes at a premium*), found a couple of dozen empty N2O disposables (size of the disposable CO2/Ar welding bottles) dumped in the bushes - recovered, will make good small foundry crucibles for ally, and a good source of sturdy pipe! You'd think they would have weighed them in, surely?

Well we had a better look today, mostly Oyxgen some full some empty a range of bottles, Albee, Boc & others, one Acetylene, Refrigerant gas & helium, plus more inside we cant get to as its padlocked up, Mostly Air liquide & theres a local stockist not far away i can probably get shot of them to.
Then the club officers started arguing about if we can touch anything as the owner hasnt actually officially been chucked out yet.
My argument was that summer hols are close & last year we had a spate of grass fires nearby, not a good idea to have crap like this laying about where it is at risk of catching fire.
I have left them to it. When & if they decide i can dispose of to boc & the air liquide guy. Wont be selling anything. Tbh its a pain in the ass but would be a bigger one if it caught fire in a fibreglass boat stuffed full of foam, paint, resin etc!

I sent letter to the last known club members address by recorded post and an email to the address we had and posted a copy of them on the club noticeboard that if the boat and cylinders are not removed by a set day about a month ahead . The the boat club committee will assume they have been abandoned and will dispose of them as they deem fit with no penalty , compensation or come back to the club . You should also put it out on facebook and as a small notice in a local rag to the same effect

As club secretary I had a similar problem with a lapsed member doing the same trick dumping their crap in the club.

Took legal advice of the councils barrister & a few councilors and that of the local copper wrt the tort of theft . It took eight failed appointments by him to clear his crap out before we acted within the scope of the club notice.

We had a quorum committee meeting where it was recorded in the minutes as properly proposed , seconded and passed what we'd do . We skipped or scrapped everything some four skips worth made some useful club funds doing it . Many months later he surfaced demanding compensation for his , " Stolen property " , I'd left the club by then but don't think he did anything about it after his solicitor got copies of all the papers & minutes.

Whatever you guys do please check locally that what you want to do is legal and watertight

If any bottles are going to BOC just make sure they don't charge you an "environmental handling charge" like they appear on my invoices

Nope, they're steel, but a decent grade - and I'll cut the valve end off and melt ally *in them*, once I've coated the insides with clay slip (otherwise the molten ally dissolves the steel, which can be quite exciting and, worse, ruins the ally by making it brittle).

What does it say in the club rules / regulations/ terms of membership etc ?
It may assist with the clubs issue relating to disposal and ownership

Point taken guys. Like many clubs & boatyards we have an ongoing & frankly increasing problem with people dumping boats on us. Many join with the best of intentions then drift away, Or they are members for many years get old & dont get rid of the boat while its still worth something. After they pass away the relatives often dont realise that grandads boat that they had thought worth money is now a thumping great worthless liability that is still attracting bills.
There is a well established disposal route where members are written to etc etc notices posted etc, So everything should be above board, Unless someone cant or wont be contacted, Occasionally as now timescales may conflict with dealing with practicalities.
This guy wont be the first & i doubt the last, though he has taken the hoarding of junk to the extreme.

With Albee, you actually own the cylinder and pay to swap it so there should be no issue selling those ones.

I used to run two cylinders when I was using BOC even they thought I only had one. Once they went bar code that all stopped.
