as the other posts state i dont think that torch will provide enough heat for brass .
I remember using an old paraffin blowtorch when i was at school to try and repair a little model steam engine took my eyes off it for a couple of seconds and the alluminium flywheel was on the floor in a puddle but the small brass pipe was still intact. that was the end of that i threw it in the bin

I haven't been in one since the mid 80's. I get boxes of borax bought for me now and again, I use it to dip small parts before hardening. It keeps them nice n bright. Last time I went in a supermarket was when they just finished[or maybe not quite finished] the first local superstore. As we got to the check out the power went, while we were waiting we eat everything we were going to buy[others standing there took our lead], by the time they had the tills working I was full, haven't been back since;-)

Don't think you are getting hot enough silver solder would be easier.

Hi Again. just to add the gas lamp i have is a mixture of Butane and propane,

could this be the reason ie not enough heat to melt brass rods into bright

red steel your answer would again be much appreciated .. thanx rob

Probably, a mapp one should do it. get your blow lamp and see if you can melt the rod on its own, if the blow lamp melts the rod then you should be able to use it

Hi, Thanx again, i have tried that and it gets the rod red hot but not melting so youve answered my question my gas lamp is the problem thax so much again Rob have a great xmas

You need more heat!
You will not melt a brazing rod with just a but/prop mix
You need a oxy/prop or oxy/acety set up
You could however use silver solder if you dont want to change your torch and kit, as silver solder will run using your existing but/propane mix torch

Hi, Thank you for your advice im starting to get the gist now, ill now get the silver rods, can i just ask one more question is silver strong and is it imperviuos to petrol, as im going to use it on 6mm mild steel pipe on top of a pump.. thank you so much nice xmas M8

Yes, oh and just just get one rod they are a bit pricey

There are oodles to choose from on the Ebay . Can any one give him a better clue as to the most suitable for the task in hand ?

have a look at the Rothenberger superfire 2. I use it at work with mapp gas for prazing all pipework up to half inch. I also use a small torch similar to a portapak from BOC but on a much smaller scale. don't have the details to hand but will dig it out of the shed when I get home.
