gas blow lamp brazing

Hi, Please can anyone tell me if im doing something wrong? im trying to braze to 6mm steel fuel pipes.1/ i have a soudogaz blow lamp, (which ive used to join copper plumbing pipes) 2/ brass silicone rods 3/ cleaned the parts down to shining steel 4/ heated the both parts until red 5/ applied the brass rod, but there is no flowing of the brass to join the steel parts> i am confused. please guide me what im doing wrong, or what i need.. thanx rob

thats no use use sifbronze brazing flux or buy a few coated rods

Hi, so if i get the flux you suggested will they be ok with the rods i have

(Bronze silicon brazing rods)? and also what fluxed rods are also good? thanx

Don't think you are getting hot enough silver solder would be easier.

any rods realy as long as flux coated. the torch should heat job up as its only thin metal .when using flux or fluxed rods. if metals hot enough it will flow no probs if it just melts in to blobs its not hot enough

Hi, Thanx for all your help, just two last question, does the parts glowing red mean it is hot enough? and can you tell me the best blow lamp diy type to consider.. thanx rob

As above, don't think you will get hot enough with that torch for brass rods, but first of all you will deffinately need some flux. If it is a one off job get a stick of silver solder that will be covered in flux. If you plan to do this type of thing a lot then buy a tub of sifbronze.

heres a trick if anyones interested get a soft grey breeze block break into small pieces .pack it round job to be heated . it greatly increases the temperature and contains the heat

at first glance I would say your blowlamp is too small, but you say it heats to red heat, I would make a shield with thermalite breezeblocks around the job to contain/reflect the heat in, use brazing flux (or borax) & mix it with water to a smooth paste,after cleaning the job apply the wet flux then heat the work gently & the water will evaporate & then full blast till the flux melts, warm the rod & dip it in dry flux & apply to the work as you proceed,if that doesn't work you've not got enough heat into the job, also if you heat it for too long the flux deteriates. gud luk!!

Well there you go, its either a thermalite block make a heat shield, buy some flux, or get a ready fluxed brazing rod.
alternatively just buy one ready fluxed silver solder rod with less heat.

Borax from the chemist is also a good flux if you don't want to buy a can of sif flux , heat the rod and dipit in to coat in borax then go for the braze.

Bung any unused borax back in a sealing screw top jar to keep it dry (it makes for a good ant killer as well if sprinkled out by bthe nest/runs )

As already said silver solder may be your best bet.

I tried this a few years ago,but part of the thermalite block got too hot and exploded,leaving me with an eyeful of hot concrete.
I guess goggles might have been appropriate.

Don't know ,we live in a very soft water area and have our own business from which we buy all of our cleaning stuff . I have not ventured down the soap & stinky isles in a supermarket for over 10 years.
