Ok this is a new question I have never thought of:
Q. Does the amount of air flow available through an air filter need to suit the cc, or the power output?
I have been looking for an air filter for my marine Gardner 4LW, which is relatively low power, about 60hp, but large capacity, 5600cc.
I have been offered an air filter and box (paper cartridge type) off a more modern John Deere engine of 4500cc, which must develop at least double the bhp.
Will the JD filter allow enough air through?
1) Double the power, so surely it must be able to?
2) Much smaller cubic capacity, so it couldn't possibly?
I am finding this tricky, it is not so obvious as you think. If an engine makes better use of its air (eg with a turbo and intercooler) then does it need less volume of air, per horsepower developed?
Do more economical modern injectors and combustion chambers, developing greater specific bhp, require less air per horsepower?
