Ok on the top lawn (pictured) that used to be an old veg allotment I think I’m going to strim and rake all I can, then glyphosate. Once it’s died back I’ll rake again and the rotovate and rake to get it more level (there are lump raised old veg plots).

Then seed and fertilise.

Easy as that right!

The other parts of the lawn are more level so I’ll probably spot weed and then seed and fertilise it repeatedly

Yeah, ripped it up last year and in the last few weeks it’s grown from literally nothing to that!

The garden is too much for me as I work away during in the week and have a mountain of other stuff that needs doing. But the work involved to get it to a manageable garden seems massive.. which is why I want to dump chemicals on everything and start with a blank slate

Don't kill the Rhubarb!

I'm not keen on glyphosate to be honest , I use a brush cutter and rotovator for weed control on my land around my olive trees , vegetable plot and grape vines, it's all about timing, a quick wizz around with the brush cutter keeps the more robust weeds in check and the low growing wild flowers and grass and clover take over. And in places were I need bare earth for planting I rotovate the weeds in before they seed as green manure, it's so dry here they don't regrow much if I water carefully..

Don't strim before applying weedkiller, you're just reducing the area of foliage through which it can be absorbed

this was a flagged area when i moved in no flags as all had been removed the steps went straight forward i turned them
dug it all up racked it all level and grassed it with rye grass took about 3 weeks to grow

Get a can of 'Roundup', kills just about all but very deep rooted weeds and doesn't harm the soil. Get the 'proper' stuff from Farm Supplies.

It's a quicker growing coarse grass, supposed to take a lot of wear, dogs, kids etc.

i bought the loose from here about 4 bags as i wanted a good coating on the grass and quickly grown

I have been trying to grow the stuff and it just wont, either root dies off or i just get a few stickes like pencils..

depends how your growing it the one i had native to the country victoria root i had got 3 roots from one root

Lucky blighter with that rhubarb! I love the stuff and it aint cheap in the supermarkets. Get pulling and selling. Wish I was near I would buy it off you!

im going to really upset you

2 years to grow dont pick any off for first year, i picked off 2 plants 3 times a year so got 6 crops for making rhubarb crumble or rhubarb pie also leaving some leafs on allows it to grow better

also by sound of it you let your rhubarb flower which is a big no no, any flower rip it out quickly as it yields very little,

another bit of info if your south freeze a little bit of the root before you plant it

I have two plants but they are little and they have been planted a few years. It is all to do with the soil. I am in Stoke on Trent and there is a lot of mining waste around where I live. Although I am on the outskirts of North Stoke there are not too many fields farmed, just grassland.

I always give mine a good covering in the run up to December with manure and straw and all the tea leaves are thrown on it (we use loose tea). But still poor results. I believe there are different strains of the plant and the ones I got are not big producers. But they do grow here in Stoke as the daughter was given a big bunch off a mate at work.

Its such a shame you have too little time for that garden, Phil. Im seeing restating the raised beds, room for a greenhouse, room for a 30ft wind up antenna tower, and lots of room for chickens
