Garden gate

Hi peeps,i have been informed that our council is donating some nearbye land to those awfully nice traveling people.
my back garden is pretty secure apart from the gate so i was thinking about making a steel frame from 50 X 25 and either an 8X4 sheet of ply or a sheet of steel.
the gate will be around 2 meters high and 1 meter wide.
any constructive ideas welcome as i havnt done this sort of thing before .

If your making it a solid gate then make it strong as the wind loves blowing then down

Steel over ply or the other way around makes cutting through with a saw nigh on impossible as anyone who's ever hit wood with a cutting disk will know...

Probably a no win situation, if the unwanted want in they will get in and sometimes high fences etc can make it more attractive to them, they know once in they can't be seen by the public.

Security lights, cameras, good locks are about it, a good Rottweiller helps of course

If you use plywood drill a few 1inch random holes to allow the wind to flow through to alleviate the power.

thanks for the replies,spikes ?,shirley razor wire is cheaper ,it,s in a pretty secluded location so we dont get too much wind,i recon 50X25 should be strong enough for the frame if i put an X brace on ?.
i could clad it in something else that lets a bit of breeze through,maybe mesh as you cant see much if you look over the gate.
as for fixing it to the brick house wall,should i use wood or steel for the frame ?.

so back to the original question,will a 50 X 25 frame with X bracing be strong enough,as i said before it,s pretty secluded,end of a culdisack with trees and high bushes all around,neighbours are mainly retired so the sight of a white transit turning up would get the curtains flapping,i just want to make it a bit harder if they do try their luck

I would use 40x40 rather than 50x25 box section, with a x brace it will be fine, the strength of the gate in high winds would then depend on what it is fitted to, winds tend to remove the holdings on each side rather than destroy the gate.

So if it's a wall then spread the hinge pins over a couple of blocks or bricks and if you are putting posts in then good heavy ones concreted as deep as you can get into the ground.

thanks,wind isnt really a problem as there is a row of trees that shield me,the original gate is made of the softest wood known to man and is still standing so it cant be that bad.
ill attach a post to the house wall,any problem with using steel as oposed to wood ?,the other side goes to the corner of a sturdy shed.

Suppose steel would be best, wood rots and screws can work loose, steel rusts of course but cover the surfaces going against the wall with a layer of heavy grease, saves rust marks running down the wall.
