Hi

Move house soon but i don't know how to build by next garage. It's going to be 17 ft wide by 25 ft long.

Idea,s are prefab or wooden or just get planing permission and build one out of breeze blocks. It's got to be high due to working on alot of discoverys.

Any photo's and idea's would be a great help.

You will need planning as most are limited to 30sq.m floor space without a warrant. I`d go for a Concrete base and build it in 6" concrete blocks. Maybe two buttresses along the length. Pretty wide for a flat roof. May have to bolt your timbers together. Simple roof solution is timber rafters sheeted in ply or Sterling board then external covering of Jablite and Butyl rubber with quartz ballast and fibreglass trims. Cement render or pebbledash external walls to suit house. This is what I will be doing myself over the next year.

I have to dig out a bit by hand first (no machine access) I plan 6mx5m and 5m high.

Excellent Tony..and hats off to the guy. Pitched roof are better than flat. But if you know what you are doing with flat roofs they will give you a lot more space and roof detail is easier. Never on a UK house though. I always give walls two coats of render and three on the South and West elevations.

The Finished job looks great, but it looks like he layed the concrete base on the mud ! also how did he get in the gap between his garage and the neighbors to render the wall and fix the guttering ! Nice garage tho.

Most garages are built without diggiing "strip" foundations.........that is the idea of the concrete base.....floor and foundations in one to spread the weight. This stops separation if any slight movement should occur as it is all on one platform. The polythene is a barrier to stop any contaminants in the soil attacking the concrete. He may have rendered the wall on the way up as he built it.
