My mate has just used screed and that has gone off like granit. All he has done is upped the cement ratio and water content. That's what is going in the man cave and if I get time it will get a few coats of that Sika screed hardener afterwards.

I have a similar issue. I have a large garage/workshop which has a readymix concrete base. I painted this in 2 pack epoxy floor paint when new but the surface is softish and very dusty. The 2 pack is now lifting and coming off in sheets where there has been any load. I was wondering what to do... try to get as much off as I can and repaint....put on a top layer of self levelling screed, then repaint....etc. The area is too big for tiles. Any advice would be much appreciated...I get covered in dust when working on anything right now.
same problem here as well. i am forever painting it. i guess it was the cheapest mix possible!!

The concrete floor on my garage dusted badly to the point if you were lying on the floor, you would be covered in dust & coughing after. I used International stabiliser before painting it with their garage paint. It seems to have worked as the paint stays on & cures the dust.
If I were in the situation of the OP I would screed to a minimum of 60mm with a mix of 1:2:4 grit sand & pea gravel with a proprietary bonding agent applied first. Would also reinforce the 20mm chicken wire. When it had cured sufficiently I would then seal and harden the concrete surface to stop any dusting.

I used the interlocking tiles. No use for welding though - so if you are using the area for hot work, don't go this route. Mine are rather pock-marked now.
I'm happy enough with how it turned out, but it wasn't cheap and I would probably go another route if I was to do it over again. If you do choose the interlocking tiles option, make sure you lay them in summertime, otherwise they can expand and bow upwards when it gets warmer if the edges are held tight by cupboards, machinery etc.
So with the benefit of hindsight, I'd probably go for porcelain tiles.

IIRC even bonded concrete floors should be at least 75mm thick to power float.

I had a similar problem to some of the posts on this thread, newly laid garage floor where the concrete was soft and marked easily and the dusting was horrendous.
Sealed the floor as best I could and then laid porcelain tiles on top. 2 years on and they are still looking good, have stood up to trolley jacks, axle stands, tools and car parts being dropped on them with no damage however they really do not like welding splatter and this has marked the tiles in a few places.
The tiles aren't anything special, went along to my local independent tile supplier and bought some end of line stuff that was reduced but did splash our on good quality adhesive and grout
Rather than use a comb the adhesive was floated out and then tiles laid on top so there were no air pockets underneath
Am in the process of building an extension on the side of my garage as I need somewhere to put my miller and lathe and will be doing the same in there but this time will get square edged tiles instead
