garage door locks

Just brought my first house, now have a garage to use as a workshop. Used to have my workshop at my girlfriends house and it was broken into, I then added 4 locks on the inside of the door, could acses garage from a rear door so you could not see any locks from the outside.

New garage only has one up and over door, was thinking of adding the bolts in the link bellow, 1 in each corner, doors are only thin do guessing it wouldnt take much to bend them open? Would not see much on the outside, even less if you paint bolt heads same colour as door, if I have my old bolts and padlocks on the outside it shows I have somthing worth steeling

They look good and low profile on the outside. Have been considering a pair for the pickup as there is no lock on the tailgate (or option for the age I have)

I was in York last week and shown around a mate of a mates workshop, he has put an excellent system into his garage for very little money, he was sick of false alarms with his pir burglar alarm.

He put a simple magnetic catch on the door through a timer, if the hidden switch in the garage is not cancelled within 5 seconds of the door opening a 500 watt floodlight and an internal soundbomb both kick in.

Think he said it cost him around £25 for the bits and when it goes off it's like walking into hell itself., blinded and deafened it was awesome, I certainly would not hang around.

i have an air selonoid on my alarm. if the alarm trips it dumps all the comressed air through a rather large air horn, if it goes off you have no choice but run away

The best way i've seen of securing an up and over garage door was to hang it on hinges so its a side opening door.

I have a pair of these on my door, simple to fit and discrete, I think if it looks like Fort Knox it will attract lowlifes.
I also fitted strips of steel on the outside of the door covering the pins and protecting them from access.
There had been a spate of garage breakins locally.

Had my 6month old up and over door peeled open by some scrotes in 2011, I fitted a pair of those exact locks to the replacement door, can be unlocked from both sides which is great, and very discrete as chunko said. One thing I did do was to reinforce the inside of the door with a bar of mild steel flat, something like 50 x 3mm, then mount both the locks through this. I put my bolts on the lower side of the door about 400mm off the ground, the door was about 10x more solid after the mod, the weak point on these doors seems to be once you get a little movement, theyre easy to wrench off the tracks, or fold them up.

This type of lock got good reviews in a bike mag test and if you painted it to match the door would be unobtrusive

all you can do is slow them down or make it so they make a lot of noise
both of wich increse the chance of them getting caught so will hopefully put them off

our local scrote just used to take a running jump at up and over doors most just collapsed he must have done 20 to 30 like that police got him in the end think he did 9 months he never tried wooden doors
