Gaming PC help for a clueless father!

Morning,

I didn't realise this thread would generate so much response and you all have greatly improved my understanding of the world of Gaming PC's when i explained it to the missus we both agreed (well she did) that its just a step too far to even spend £500 on this at the moment. He has his xbox and he has his chromebook for school so i think we will leave it at that until he a bit older and hopefully the component market has calmed down a little.

My middle son was 7 a few weeks ago.
He got a huge box of second hand nerf guns which he's played with everyday. Massive nerf wars with his brothers A trench spade that he's thrilled with as loves digging in the garden and the kids spades are crap.
And with some money he got from family he bought a copy of farming simulator for the Nintendo which he seems to be learning something from playing. Balance is key

Yeah but I was let loose with a shotgun on a racing bike. Can you imagine that at 15 these days. Lol
Fit as a fiddle until I stopped playing football at 42 when my wife had a stroke, and my legs became her legs as well. Could not afford to break one.

I think we/they only realised we/they enjoyed it when we see kids and grandkids growing up.
I would have loved CNC to be affordable when I was young. But kids are into games a lot more now.

I will throw out a different option.
Gaming PCs need expensive graphics cards.
How about this?

Supposed to be for over 14 to do with eyes etc
But he has everything else.
And yes he had a brand new bike just before lockdown and you can count on one hand how many times he has been on it.

It's due to distance between eyes.

Keep playtime short and make sure to adjust them to its smallest setting.

Can't recall if the quest can be adjusted manually as well as with software.

My eldests on but the two younger I keep to a minimum.

I think the Oculus being stand alone for £299 will outperform any PC of the same price.

Don't dispute that. It is hampering pushing the tech though.

Are Facebook still forcing quest users to link to Facebook? Heard about people being locked out of there accounts both ways.

Not sure - we have the Oculus Rift - connected to my brother's £3000 PC so that does all the work.
But for people who don't have a high end PC then the new stand alone ones are a great solution.

as a person who's worn glasses all there life vr goggles is a no for me for the children

computer screens are bad enough for damaging eyes i cannot see why parents want to give there children vr when it can damage there young eyes

after 16 they can do as they please but until then my comment as a parent is a no

I have a quest 2 so keep up a bit with announcements, apparently a FB account is no longer mandatory but I haven't investigated it yet.

seems expensive but its how you build one that makes a difference

case well that thing alone can cost you 30.00 up too 600.00 i prefer easy clean easy access filters
mainboards to be honest i like onboard for net use or for films there ample enough play basic games on them
gcard well that can be costly 50.00 - 2000.00
memory well you can buy cheap not a good thing though 4gb up to 64gb
cpu intel vs amd intel was known for running numbers and needing 2 memory cards amd was more gamers machine and 1 memory stick that became the battle between them
power supply best buying a good one over 600 watt

most new pcs come with a 3-5 year warrantee ebay is 2 months

ive bought as i can afford it but i have 9 computers only the net computers use onboard gcard the rest have a gaming gcard in them

you can build cheap and then build from there its really down to ones needs at the time
life of a pc is over 5 years compared to a laptop of 3 years

Oh yeah, i bought my Oculus quest 2 specifically for use with the pc on games like Elite Dangerous and Half life Alyx but I then found my GFX are not powerful enough for VR . At the prices GFX cards are at its gonna be at least a year before i can justify the cost . Although the standalone games are pretty good, some of them look really good GFX wise too.

That's the downside to the quest. Requires more horsepower than the rifts for the same games via link

Half life alyx is the best vr game I've played. Face huggers in vr is brown trouser time.

Haven't got around to testing ED yet. Bit of a fad setting up controllers everytime.

I love Elite Dangerous. Incredible in VR you actually feel like you are sitting in a spacecraft.
Even Google Earth is incredible in VR.
You can walk around London luke a giant Lego town and peer over the tops of buildings into hidden courtyards etc.

Star wars Squadrons is superb too.

If you have an artistic flair this is well worth its price.

Lost hours in it.
