I've heard this loads, but I've also read articles about it being nonsense. Think it's safer to advise just don't do it, or use an air fed mask, or do it with a fan blowing the fume away. Having had fume fever before reading up or being told about the dangers, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
It does work, when I was on BT the jointers got a daily milk allowance to counteract the lead fumes from soldering up the sheaths on underground cables - I think it was a pint a day, the calcium is easier for the body to take in than heavier metals.
