I accidentally bought a few sheets of 0.8 galvanised, should I avoid welding it or can I safely removed the coating and use it? Thanks, Christian

If it's that really thin type of coating (zintec?), you should be ok.

Try it and see the result.
If it's not good, use medium grade sandpaper or wet and dry to take the thin coating off both sides, up to about two inches from the weld line. Cutting or flap disks tend to take too much metal off such thin material.
Sometimes this coating isn't really galv as we know it, and can be welded okay.

Using galvanised sheet is really horrible. I wire brushed and sanded the area but it still spat badly and created a white furry substance....no sore throat yet...

Probably real galv, then - zintec isn't usually all that bad.

Errm, the Op is talking about 0.8 mm thin steel which is galv coated...
If it's galv that has penetrated into the interstices of the metal, as it sounds from the attempt to weld it, you may have to take as much as 0.1 mm off each side before it's cleared, which leaves you with 0.6 mm. Not good. I think I'd keep these few sheets for making riveted panels for something else!

Because I'm too impatient to wait for new sheets to arrive I have been welding it - it's actually one side of an engine bay - very complex with lots of butt welding. I'm past the point of no return. At least it won't rust as quickly this time...

No...I only did a small amount of welding with good ventillation - no side effects...yet. Are there serious health implications? Also does normal welding have health risks (other than the obvious), from fumes?

It can be a lot more than a sore throat. I had a marina van years ago that needed an inner sill for the m.o.t.Having no suitable metal at that time I picked up a bit of galvanized ducting to use.I welded it in with oxy acetelene & with my head in the footwell.That night i woke up with breathing difficulties.Frightened the life out of me.I should have known better.DONT TAKE CHANCES.
