fully synthetic in place of hypoid ep 80/90

I usually use gl4 spec ep 90 in my axle and gearbox on the stockcar as they contain yellow metals.
I've been given this from one of my sponsors, he says it is better but i'm not 100% convinced?

Perhaps things have changed but I would have thought that a gearbox and the hypoid bevel in a rear axle would need different specs of lubrication.

stick the original in and say nowt tip there stuff out and put yours in to there container

When we were running the Morgan in the National hill-climb championship we ran Castrol ATF in gear box & Salisbury LSD we had over 200 BHP at flywheel out of a 1996cc Ford X flow

quite a lot of boxes are filled with 5w30 engine oil now

tha hurts me i've just had to chicken out of filling my new box and diff with 5w30 and spend the cash on some fully synthetic 75w90 gl4 lsd gear oil

I wonder how much more wear on the hypoid diff you might get with ATF than ep80/90? and is ATF OK with white metals and syncros in the box ?

I've had 2 transit and 1 sprinter gearboxes rebuilt, 2 different gearbox places... both told me to fill it with ATF after fitting

Transit gearbox guy specifically said the Ford oil is too thick and he swaps the oil out for ATF asap before theres any gearbox problems :-o

i've filled a lot of stuff up in the past with 5w30 UTTO or super univeral it says gl4 on the spec sheet so, i was going to put it in my freshly built gearbox as my logic says wet clutches and brakes aint no diffrent in the wet clutch plates in the diff but i'm a chicken, but as i'm going to be throwing quite a bit of power through the box.

Carlube is a decent product
I have used it for years with no problems at all

You have to be cautious using synthetic gear oil in some gearboxes as it can be too slippy. The syncros rely on some drag to work properly, if the oil is too slippy you might get gear selection problems. I know it causes that issue in peugeot 205 gearboxes, in them you are best using the original spec 75/80 grade oil.

In other gearboxes the synthetic oil is a big improvement, I put it in my Subaru Legacy Turbo gearbox & it transformed it from notchy & slow to smooth & quick.

slightly off track........ATF is a non frothing oil.........I use it in my lathe gearbox and had it in the front forks on my Electra Glide.........
use fully synthetic in the gearbox diff unit VW T4 with no probs, was a bit notchy and slightly noisey.........now slick and sweet........
