Fuel Pipe Problem

Hi guys, I'm doing a bit of refurbishing under my Carina, I took this fuel filler pipe off to re paint it and I find that the bent bit has lots of little holes in it. I have tried everywhere to get one, even direct from Japan and no one has one, would it be acceptable to cut the bend off and fit a bent rubber hose?

I'm not sure whether that would be Ok for that length, but if it is you should use proper fuel hose, it is electrically conductive to avoid sparks from static.

Hi mate, can you see the clamp on the left? just where the three small pipes almost touch the large one. I was thinking of cutting it this side of the bracket, leaving enough pipe to get the rubber hose on and again just above the bend but below the other bracket you can see wrapped around the pipe, so in effect just the bend would be rubber as that appear to be the only area with pin holes in.

Well this one has a rubber hose from the end of this metal one to the tank, so I thought it would be ok.

just buy a branded name rubber fuel hose as theres some right crap being sold at motor factors that perishes within the year

I have done it many times, just cut out the bad fuel line and replace with rubber, jjust need to leave an inch or so to get the rubber pipe over and clip down with decent line clips, jubilees are ok but there are better ones out there.
I have even removed a complete fuel line in the past and redone with rubber fuel line, all, well good car accesorie shops sell it. around £2.50 a meter.

Not in a million years. Brakes linings and fuel hose are a big nono secondhand. Modern fuels destroy rubber at a rate of knots, so not even the EBay goods are likely to be safe now. I was going through standard hose 12 monthly on my injected engine. There is some sobering reading here...

So choose carefully. I use Cohline biofuel hose now and it isn't cheap. Because of my concern about this topic, I now stock it for sale on my online shop.

I had the same problem years ago with a Cortina Mk4 filler pipe, I wrapped it with woven fibre glass tape soaked in stag jointing compound,Still going strong when I sold it a long time afterwards.

Well that will likely be a good purchase. The filler may not be a serious of course because it is unpressurised but when they perish, the car fills with petrol fumes that you can't quite locate! This "green" fuel is even destroying fibreglass tanks.

You will get a pre formed bend from a recent scrap car
The pipe is made for the job in hand
Petrol eats rubber hose

That's a point mate, I only have a few pin holes, if I clean off the paint and treat the bits of rust, bearing in mind it's only the filler, could I not wrap the pipe with fiberglass tape soaked in resin?, fuel contact would only be during filling and then only through a few little pin holes in the metal pipe?

if theres only a few clean them up and soft solder them

Hi Sparky mate, Now then, other than the mig welder I only have a soldering iron, I don't think it would get that pipe hot enough.

I'm sure that (or soldering etc) would work for a good while but worth noting that small crevices etc can accelerate corrosion as can contact between different metals i.e. galvanic

i filled a 5 gallon jerrycan with petrol and it had a leak underneath had to turn it upside down in me van and take it home. was only 2 pinholes a quick sand over with emerycloth and using my large soldering iron heated it with a blowtorch tinned over the holes tipped it the right way up and it was fine that was 12 years ago and still holding

My iron is only 25 watt for electronic work, Maybe if I find a chunk of iron and heat it on the wifes gas ring, I will see what I can find
