Fuel level sensor

My generator has this sensor / fuel pickup combo.

Problem is it only allows about 20-22L of fuel to be used out of an aprox 40+L tank.

The genny is sold as having a 20L tank but actrually has a bigger one.

Now I think this is to stop warranty claims re dirty fuel getting into the system.

However 20 ish liters does not quite do a full days use so we need to top up each day.

I was hoping to just extend the float by glueing a second float to the bottom & possibly extending the pick up a bit.

When the genny shuts down due to low fuel there is still a good 2+" left. Its only about 4 to 5" deep when full.

The sensor is obviously a variable resistor not just an on off switch as the genny can also shut down if fuel useage is excessive ie a leak not just on low level.

You can also set the minimum level (its on as low as it can go).

Any suggestions of making this work easily?

This looks like a longer one but not sure if plate is the same size & it has a 3 wire set up not two wires.

I did this on one of my huyandi gens

Extended the pickup tube by just cutting it and fitting a swageloc compression fitting inbetween the cuts to extend it by about an inch.

Unplugged the level sensor (or bypassed/bridged it)

I don't remember what I did exactly to the sensor. There was something in the instructions about what to do with the wiring if you were running from an external fuel bowser and I just did whatever that said. Mofgt have involved a resistor but I don't remember as I fitted the ats and remote at the same time.

Fire it up and unplug the sensor. If it cuts out then bridge the sensor wires.
I suppose you could be fancy and fit a switch to over-ride the sensor, so it cuts out when it's 'empty' then you flick the switch to access the 'reserve tank'

I want to keep the run dry protection so if I am not here all anyone has to do it refil it & reset the panel.

Not bleed the system, even though its not bad on this genny dont want the risk as we are off grid.

There are a few of these generators that are available with either standard or long-run fuel tanks,
Simple option might be to see if the sender from a long-run version of yours is a direct swap (although if yours has a 40l tank it might be long-run anyway!)

I didn't mess with the level sensor itself. I did fit the remote display so it shows a low-fuel alert when there is plenty remaining.
If you measure the pick-up tube size I'll have a look and see what size mine was as I think I've got some extra extension fittings here somewhere..

Which model gen, please??

I've got a few of these,
All DHY(?L) series, all diesel

Couple of the bigger sled-mounted water-cooled that are currently out on rent/hire as back-up systems

Couple of the smaller ones on wheels that I use myself for mobile events.

Not had any problems with any of them.
Only thing to watch for is they all say they are ATS compatible but only the ones with the fancy control panel are actually ready for ATS. The others (at least the ones I got) all need an additional module buying and fitting. Don't buy the remote control module on its own as the ats module also has the remote input and is the same price so just buy that one .

They are pretty good value for money.
I'm sure you could buy an older, better made machine for the same price but the huyindys look nice which is important if you want to rent them out or use them in public places.
If you just want something to stick in a shed for your own use then I'd not have any reason to recommend them over anything else although they are quite popular. Service parts are easy to get and I'd expect repair parts would be as well.

It can only use the top 2/3rds ish of the tank.

Will have to look up the different model numbers for standard & long run generator & then see if the parts are different.

Probably worth checking it's the correct pick-up fitted if you can find the parts list.

Maybe they ran out of 20l tanks when building yours and fitted a 40l but still used the 20l pick-up.

Although mine was the same, would 'run out' of fuel when it was still at least 1/4 full.
