fill it ,,, you need a finger over the hole in the bottom and remove the bleeder from the top ,,, otherwise you can end up vacum bleeding them , far easier to fill the filter

Grotamar 82 additive is (was) excellent for dealing with diesel bug (personal experience on a boat and a friends X Trail). I bought it on the back of a PBO test that is still available on line.
Just tried to find a current source for it and it seems you can't buy it over the counter any more due to pesticide regulations
Vast majority (probably all?) Common rail engines have an electric diesel lift pump... so you can just change the filter, pop off the fule pipe from filter to inje tion pump and turn on the ignition... lift pump will fill the pump and lines for you (sometimes have turn ignition on and off to do it all couple of times)

in theory they should ,,, but if you get the filter swap wrong its not unusual to spend a coupe of hours getting them going again ,,, on occasions if you run one out of diesel ,,, they never go again ,,,,

I had this in the Surf filter last year, I don't know if it was a duff batch of diesel or some manky veg oil I put in it but it caused all sorts of trouble. I change my diesel filter every year. I give it a dose of fuel treatment at the same time.

Year's ago a local builder called me and said he had a bad oil leak on his nissan cabstar truck. When I looked the oil filter had rusted through I asked when it was last serviced he said he'd never had it serviced since new, it was 16 years old. I got him a filter and was going to drop the remaining oil out but he wouldn't let me do it he said just top it up there's nothing wrong with that oil.Over the years I've never changed a fuel filter on any of my daily drivers whether diesel or petrol. My current 2015 golf tdi has 120k miles on the clock still on the original filter.
Do manufacturers recommend changing them because some other regions don't have clean fuel?
I think he had it for another 4 or 5 years before it rusted away but the engine was still going.

old audi 2.4 v6 were a pita too , you could wreck a pump trying to start one if you didnt know the trick ,,, again it was vacum the diesel through first , Ive seen more than one disco run out of diesel and never go again ,,, the high pressure pump fails from lack of lube , and the cost of it and a hand full of injectors and the time adds up to more than the value of the car ,, I keep saying it but the emission legislation has led to diesels being junk now ,,,, bring back the 2000- 2004 ish tech , when diesels ran forever.
