Well I would say you've already made your mind up. The thing is when your talking the league of machine in this case price should not be a deciding factor. If you want the best go with what Jim says and buy the fronius. I'm pretty sure he's not on the Fronius commission scheme so it will be non bios sound advice.

I used to be a Fronius agent, so I know how good they are, I know they are also the dearest but it's not without good reason.

Try finding a dud fronius,itll take you a while.kemppis come up for sale broken often.
they are still one of the more reliable inverters probably on a par with lincoln and miller but fronius are like the duracell bunny

ANY rental welder that lasts 13 years has gotta be good regardless of the make.

Why? rental firms aint stupid, and ,when I use rental kit, there are dire warnings about the state you return the kit in.Rental kit don't do in day in day out duty,
it has bursts of activity,followed by an inspection and rest on the shelf.

I'm sure you, being a welding enthusiast has respect for any welder you hire,
my day job is building trade related and i've personally seen guys that i work with place carefully their clean tools in their vans at the end of the day and literally throw hire plant in the back covered in mud/crap etc,
good enough reason for hire equipment needing an inspection before the next hirer.

Because people that hire it treat it awfully and that is fact. Because it's not there own and they don't have the expense of repairing it if it goes wrong they simply don't give a to$$. I've seen tig machines dragged round workshops by there torches. Hire machines are maintained well by there hirer but they need to be because they go to hell and back when they are out.

Fine, but if you return hire kit in crap state, there is a charge,-they aint daft, I will concede that if a marque of machine figures highly in rental companies lists,then its a potential solid bit of kit-but then its often out of the price bracket of the bloke that hires it because its built to take the hammering it gets on hire.

I agree if a one man band hires a machine he going to look after it to avoid any surcharge.
But with large firms often it's not the guy inflicting the damage that pays the rental, it's the companies accounts dept, so they couldn't give a toss, especially if it's a rush job with agency workers added into the mix.

A consideration should also be the aftersales care, who will provide it etc. Do you have a better relationship with the Kemppi agent rather than Fronius (which I assume is a direct sale)

In the grand scheme of things there is generally not a huge difference price wise between any of the well known and well respected European/American brands for the larger industrial type units, such as 220-250-300-400-500 amp tigs and Pulse Migs, a lot will come down to the deal you can do on the day and how much discount the distributor is offering.

There is nothing wrong with dealers being competitive but be wary that if they have given you most of there discount, then there is generally nothing left to support the product in the field. Sometimes they will price it on a "arrive on a pallet and get on with it basis".

Also as far as I know, Fronius do not have a direct equivalent to the Kemppi unit you are looking at, Fronius will be the TPS-I which is there flagship mig/mag unit. The one your comparing against is not Kempiis Flagship Mig/Mag unit, that would be the FastMig Pulse and I think if you had a price on that it may be closer to the Fronius price.

However all said and done if your happy with the one you have trialled, then it doesn't really matter.

we sent our supplier(who is a kemmpi dealer and supply's most of our consumables) the specs from the fronius and told him too match it no price quotes just specs so they gave us the kempact which so far has been perfect to use .. yes i will agree the fronius would be a better machine its lovely to use but when you look at the price difference and the fact we've dealt with the kemmpi dealer for years and we have kempis that are nearly as old as me its too much going for the kempact to agree with the price difference ... the other thing being the fronius isnt euro torch which means the new torchs we have as spares already would be useless only a minor thing but it was one thing i didn like bout the fronius
