My wife's Aunt (now in a home) bought a Liebherr fridge; a basic one but the handles are genius - the pivot to lever open the doors just enough to break the seal.

I've often thought that they should make a fridge with a pin lock on the door to stop people snacking....fridge can only be accessed during some pre set hours!

My sister has bought this new fridge-freezer and the magnetic seal on the (bottom) freezer door is just super strong. She's getting on, so has to brace herself before she can pull the door open. I've tried putting down two layers of masking tape around the frame of the door. This has only had a small effect.

I'm not sure about putting more masking tape, or some thicker tape on; could this eventually create gaps in the seal?

Has anyone ever dealt with this problem previously? The fridge is a budget-price Hotpoint and I am not impressed with any part of it!

the freezer in this case leaks at the bottom and the top of the door gets iced up rather well and wants scraping so does the inside as it wants defrosting more

I've just assumed that they've used neodymium magnets in the doors seals because that's what's now easily available. I've left her with it at the moment with two layers of masking tape, which eases it a bit, bit we might go for more. It could start to rust at the bottom, but I'll park that to one side for the moment. I'm sure nobody ever had this before neodimiun magnets came a long.

I have a full length 6ft high Hotpoint and if you open the fridge after it has been standing a few minutes it is as you would expect, opens as expected. But if you open the door and get say a butter dish then close the door and use the dish quite quickly and then try to open the door it is really "stuck". But as I say after a minute or two it is back to "normal"! Pain in the backside and as you mentioned brute force to open can cause milk spillage!!

Maybe a non magnetic metal tape might work too to reduce the influence of the steel frame while still maintaining the seal...they do self adhesive foil tapes...dunno which metal would work best though.

I think if the door is slammed there can be quite the vacuum created if the seals are very good too.

It's the points scoring system all appliances have, for it to be AAAA+++ rated they have to use no electricity so they make the door seal so tight you can't open the door! Same with washing machines they use so little water they don't even wash clothes properly now

It's almost like it's an anti fat bastard device they are installing to prevent overeating...
