I don't need nothing extremely accurateFor a lathe I would use steel on steel, but scrape the surface and add oilers/an oiling mechanism.
Plastic will almost always provide some give, which you do not want in a lathe.
But if you look at prices of Chinese lathes which can be made to work good with some fettling I would not try to make a lathe from scratch.
The frame itself you can make, but all the leadscrews/gearbox etcetera add up pricewise.
Lead screw will be a simple M20 bar .
CVT drivetrain.
Feeds .... Maybe once it works using salvage parts .
On the real machine tools ,ways are hardened, I'll be working with mild steel .
I think you're rightyou’ll need a huge beam to take the load of a 3mm cut.
Anyway the beam is 200x200x16mm thick but I know that it will move during cutting .
I've said 3mm just to say something I don't know what it can theorycally handle
