Found a good source of empty cylinders

I went down the local tip at the weekend to dispose of an old fire extinguisher.

I was directed to a cage at the far end of the tip FULL of empty gas and propane cylinders.

Perfect for use as air receivers and rent free gas

I even found an empty BOC Y size agro shield cylinder.

Do you think BOC will fill the cylinder for me?

I think BOC will take the cylinder off you and keep it.

Yea get the Boc bottle! Just get someone with a BOC account to get it filled for you, even if you give them a tenner for doing it. Will save you renting one.

Unfortunately we have become ruled by doogooders! And a lot of the time we need the cameras to prove our innocence. Working in nightclubs you would have people accusing you of hitting them 'for no reason'!!! Many a time the cameras came to my rescue.

I would have thought that cylinder was at the tip for a reason, most likely as it has failed it's inspection and thus could have a defect and could explode if you tried to fill it.

If a BOC cylinder had failed an inspection it wouldn't be at the tip, BOC would have kept it and recycled it or scrapped it themselves. If you have someone with an account to take it to get refilled then they will exchange it, if the empty is found to be no good then BOC will do what needs to be done with it.

As Bullyterrier says, condemmed cylinders would be destroyed there and then. I've seen cylinders at a BOC depot with big holes cut in them.

Domestic LPG cylinders end up in tips because Joe Public has finished with them and can't be bothered taking them to the supplier. You don't get anything back on the empties.

do boc check serial numbers or anything when you return the cylinder?

or will they check your record to see what you had before?

I know someone that had a cylinder given to them, and took it back and got it filled on their account no problem. They now have an extra bottle to keep them going.

That method still relies on the holder having a legit account.

Just to reiterate what has been said before, we have gas supplier employees as members and I can guarantee that other BOC/AP/Air liquide employees watch these forums avidly so please be careful what you discuss.

My firm is on contract with Boc, but every year we do a stockcheck at their insistance and fax it back. Yes its possible to swap a full for an empty for a DIYer, cause to the best of my knowledge the serials that are on the bottles are more for test purposes. My foreman used to do it before the office came in of a morning, which was fine 'till a guy came in when they were in and said 'that guy down there used to swap them over' and he'd been doing it for years.
Zardoz, yes you'd get the deposit back on the number of bottles you had. Be sure though if you ever have an account not to order more than you have on rental, again it was done where I used to work and cost the place a small fortune in rental.

Thought for you though, if you want the old pub co2 bottles, there are loads of closed down pubs that used to keep their bottles in badly fenced beer gardens, fine when people were living and working there, but I've done work on a few that were being converted to houses or 'luxury apartments' and there was always bottles out back that the builders tried to hide cause you can't just skip them.
