Had a good excuse as to why BOC didn't phone me back, having spoke to them this morning. apparently a normal account manager is unable to reduce the prices to the same as AP are offering. So i has to go higher up, the guy that was going to phone me back didn't because of his need to speak to someone higher up before offering me a new pricing scale.

Spoke about the forum and discount for members, it seems BOC are aware of malcolm's efforts here. So hopefully they can come up with so sort of offer for forum members. I'm guessing here but i assume most members would prefer a good deal on the smaller bottles of argoshield light, X size or 2.42cubic mtrs as opposed to the large W size cylinders that I use?

I shall keep you all informed of what they say when they call me back today (hopefully)

Thanks for asking them. Fingers crossed. For me it's the rental costs that sting - I only get through one bottle of size Y in a year. Probably the same for most hobby users.

I had considered the smaller sized bottles but the economics of doing so are hard to justify, unless you just cannot deal with the physical size of the larger, 'W', bottle.

AP prices, from Richard Glasson (Mobex: 07834 259794, Email: glassor@airproducts.com), are:

Coogar 5 X10s (2.16m3) £17.41
Rental @23p per day Collection £12.62.

Coogar 5 X30s (6.49m3) £26.57
Rental @23p per day Collection £12.62.

Coogar 5 X47s (10.22 m3) £14.00
Rental @23p per day Collection £12.62.

So, collection and rental costs are the same for all sizes.

If you go for the medium size instead of the large size you pay 90% more for 36.5% less gas.

If you go for the smallest size instead of the large size you pay 24% more for 79% less gas.

Discount for refills is one thing (and a great achievement guys) but as you say the rental is the main issue and if you cylinder is changed infrequently it still costs you between £60-90 per year for your X & Y cylinders to gather dust!!

I think the thing to do with bottle rental, is use the bottle for a restoration project and when you are done, send it back. on the small bottles i guess its about £6 a month from BOC. so if you are unlikely to use again for a while send the bottle back 5 months sitting doing nothing would be the price of a refill. Unless you can get a deal from other gas suppliers that don't charge bottle rental. perhaps once we have got prices and bits sorted on gas Malcolm could do a custom page, thats link to the front page that listed gas suppliers in various area's and the sort of deals you can expect. Its somethig that crops up on a very regular basis, there are countless threads on gas, and its something that all of us can benifit from if we can get it cheaper, be you a diy car restorer or a professional fabricator

Definately thinking about a comparison page detailing what's available, cost of gas per metre welding etc maybe in the form of some sort of calculator. Lots of useful posts on the subject that could do with pulling together.

Wouldn't it be good advertising for a company to come out cheapest in such a comparison page. Might help persuade a little competition.

Defo would make a good page to add on to the site I think and bring some more forum users along when they google for Welding Gas. Lets keep up the good work the more of us that get on to BOC regarding Gas prices the more interest they might have in lowering the prices down a little maybe

I obtained a quote from both BOC and AP last month. Taking a single large (W) size bottle for a year the overall cost, including VAT, for both was:

BOC £147.18 (£2.83/week)

AP £129.92 (£2.50/week)

The refill charges were:

BOC £35.71

AP £14

Obviously, if you had more than one bottle a year the savings using AP would be greater.

Now you tell us !! I'm just about to sign a contract with AP where abouts are you as I don't mind a car trip if it will save on rental and have a days outing as well and I would rather get my Gas from a forum member in the first place.

We are independent & supply mainly 10L (X size) Argon mix & pure Argon through stockists in Swindon, Andover, Portsmouth, Herefordshire & Manchester.

We are also working towards having agents in Basingstoke, Redditch & Ebbw Vale at present.

We supply our own customers in Gloucestershire with 10L & 20L Argon mix, Pure Argon, OFN, Helium (& Oxy/acetylene in 10L)

The upfront cylinder usage for a Three year contract 10L is £39.99+Vat which equates to £1.11 PER MONTH.

With the inert gases: To encourage safe use and return there is a £25.00 refundable deposit (or £65.00 for Oxy & Acet)
Refills list from £22.50 (Argon mix) but may be negotiable for forum folk & regulars. There is enough info to start our own site so I will stop there and invite PM from those who may be interested.

small cylinders are i guess what the majority of diy folk here want enough gas to do a restoration project, with out the hassle of rental, shame your not closer to me or one of your agents. would have been very interested in an oxy & acet, throw in the motor jobbies (just not throw the acet to hard it goes bang), when you get an agent my way gasman let me know

Ideal agents are normally independent suppliers such as engineering, welding, car parts, agricultural trade counters or tool-vans.
