Are the wheels hydraulically driven by the pump on the end of the big motor or does that just power the lift and tilt rams ?

Lift and Tilt only, theres seperate a drive motor/prop/axle drive train.
Guys - thanks a lot for all your inputs, I appreciate the knowledge / time.
I have been offered a newer Caterpillar FLT with a sideshift and an extra half tonne capacity locally for a price I can't ignore, and since I don't have a lot of time to tear into this thing and get it sorted, I'm going to go with that, and recoup what I can from this one.
If anyone has any suggestions about how to get some money out of this, please shout, I might stick it on ebay as a 'nearly working'...? If anyone thinks they can fix it and wants a bargain, let me know.

Hi, pretty good - dammit, thats the pity with the whole situation!). One cell has gone, so its down to 70V (each cell = 2V), because gas built up during the charging cycle (lack of ventilation on my part), and blew the top off it. I bypassed the cell, and all works fine. Holds a charge pretty well.
I did consider selling them separately - then I'd have to scrap the rest which I guess I could do. Its a pretty big ram - I wondered about using it for something else (a tool project), but nothing springs to mind!

I'm told they're not worth much as scrap without being stripped down (which I could do I guess). A scrap dealer will basically take it for nothing if it needs stripping.
I'm also told that its not worth anything to a forklift dealer (at least, any of the ones I've spoken to). Such a shame, it was in pretty good shape and SO useful to have around, seems a waste to scrap it for the sake of a diode or contactor or whatever it is.

Hmmm , some fork lift companies would say that wouldn't they !!
Well , bang it on ebay , let the market decide ! I had to dispose of a superb little Nissan 1 ton gas truck that we'ed had since new in our family business. Had just under 3000 hours on it in 15 years !! Always serviced properly and we always greased it and lubed the chains etc every month. Looked like it was about 3 years old !
Asked a few fork truck companies for offers to buy it and they came back with , well it's an old truck , it will need full reconditioning , no one wants old trucks , bs , bs , bs !! We can go to mebe £300 max !!
Well I know what their reconditioning is , just jet wash and respray !!
Bunged it on ebay , on £3000 buy it now or best offer , had to re-list a few times but it eventually went for £2700 !! The buyer phoned up after it had been delivered and said it's the best bargain he'd ever had and when he had a fork lift company over to give it a service they couldn't believe how good it was. It's now used 4-6 hours a day and he said it's 100% reliable and he's really chuffed !!

Hi Luke - yes and no. The new one is being delivered next week no matter what. I could use some money back from the old one though. Problem is, I've got a million workshop projects that need seeing to, and fixing up an ex-forklift is pretty low on the list. I'd rather get what I can from someone who reckons they can sort it. I'll stick it on ebay unless someone wants the batteries.
If I had both fixed, I'd still keep the new one, its more capable.

Under normal weather conditions, I'd consider coming down and having a look no problem, but its a bit white n fuffly down your way at the moment, unless you want to wait a while?

I just sold the old forklift (now non-working) on ebay for 20% more than I paid for it when it was working!!! Now THATS a result!

Well the price of scrap has increased a bit...
Thats ok no probs.
You can just slowly, remember if it has power steering it maybe a bit iffy with no power/hydraulics.
