Yes I watch it and I still enjoy it. What you have to remember is that blacksmithing only looks easy until you try it. I noticed this effect when I used to play football (just kicking a ball about with mates). After even a quick game, suddenly watching football on the telly made you gasp at the extraordinary skills on display.
I like it still, it does make me laugh how many come in full of themselves then make a right **** of it, having said that 4 forges running and the studio lighting I bet it's hard work.
I still watch it ,
What I can't understand is when someone has 25 years experience in blade making makes what seems to be a basic mistake.
Surely they should be able to do about anything with their eyes closed.
That is what makes it interesting. It is already a high pressure environment on national TV, high temperature and huge time pressure. It's also a competition and they have to use whatever material gets thrown at them. Alec Steel did a faux FIF project and he made a blade that snapped in half despite running over time...
Mind you, there are some right idiots that manage to get on the program too. That just adds to the fun.
My Grandkids aged 4 and 6 love it. Ive never seen it. I cant get the channel. They were telling me the other day about this stupid man that quenched in water rather than oil and was therefore at risk of structural cracks.
The 6 year old has discovered that I have books on similar subjects so I have risen in their esteem....I heard her telling her mate "my Grandad knows all about metals and welding, he used to make blades at work".....I know its not quite true but Ill take it
