Now we have VW , PSA and Ford apparently using oval crankshaft and camshaft sprockets due to the increasing pressures associated with High Pressure fuel pumps having an effect on timing belts.

Fords were meant to be round though

Yes what should be powder on the inside of cam covers is now brown/black sludge in the sump

Work have had several engine failures because of blocked pick ups

As long as they last long enough to be out of warranty Ford don't care. The engine basically a disposable part.

I’m not old enough to remember I was in primary school
The transit connects at work snapped crankshafts and had blocked oil pickups

Ford are honouring warranty well past the usual warranty, provided the engines been serviced correctly, unlike some other manufacturers.

We could discuss all the Kia/Hyundai engines that go bang, the Stellantis wet belts who rarely honour warranty, the VAG fuel systems that fail at great cost.
At least Ford are fairly open about these things and changing complete engines when needed, and not doing things like VW who secretly swapped engines while your car was in for a service, or Toyota who would only pay for the bare minimum when the head gasket failed on their diesels in warranty.

That was blockages in the camshaft oil spray bars.

I’m convinced that ridiculously long service schedules are the cause of a good number of engine troubles nowadays, manufacturers have stretched them just too long, even 10K is pushing it IMO
