Ford transit will only idle

Local guy has 1998/9 LDV truck which had engine problem
So he fitted engine from later transit which he said is same engine but will only idle
Any ideas??

I Don't think it has a very intelligent ecu
Banana block I think.
Easiest swap is split the intake, exhaust and strap them back undo a few wires strap the starter up. bolt it all to the replacement block and top. Undoing the front end it pops straight out (never done an LDV but plenty of transits from that era, you slide it out only lift about two inch or as much as you can without hitting the windscreen just to get it over the front crossmember)

Arnt these pumps coded to the ignition key on a transit...presume its the 2.5DI banana motor

Petrol or diseasel?
Assuming it is the 2.5di then Turbo or N/A?

Check torque tube if already checked above plus fuel and air filters and timing

That age were all rotary injection pumps, but the higher output turbo ones were ECU controlled. The old EPIC system that had a delay from you pressing the throttle, and the engine actually responding.

If the non-electronic pump, then were the pump and injectors from the same engine?
Pump/Injectors changed over the years, and had to be suitably matched.
Also check the basics like the EGR valve mechanism is connected and adjusted correctly.

If EPIC.
Did he make sure to fit the old timing belt adjuster? The one with the spring to pre-load, but got locked once the bolt/nut was tightened, not the newer spring loaded self-adjusting one.
The later tensioner allowed the timing to vary enough that it would trigger a timing fault in the pump, and not rev.

seen 2 with simialar probs......asked our pump /injector repair man about it.......
He REFUSES to have anything to do with them....
both vehicles got scrapped......funny both were LDV's.......ex post office.....

If it's got an ECU, then I don't think it's a Banana 2.5Di. From 2001-on till the last of thr Convoys in 05/06, they had the 2.4L Duratorque.

(I have a Narna, it's got an "immobiliser" transponder in key & ignition, but that's about it).

Plenty of folk got the Duratorque on FB LDV Forums, and there's a guy called Sean Turnbull who still does lots of bits for them.
I've seen a few threads about ECU issues, and how I think the ignition is coded to the ECU, so it's not straightforward to just swap them.
Also, the Convoy tends to leak round the screen and wipers, and the water can run down onto the ECU in the passenger footwear and fritz it. ( I think people plonk the ECU in a sealed box to protect it.

They are an irreverent lot, but look on FB Group "LDV Vans & Converts" - place your query, and there's a good chance you'll get useful Intel.
