its the new version of workshop nudie calenders, lots of vehicles in various states of undress. its also why many garages have giant rolls of absorbent paper everywhere.

I'm really struggling to decide what car to go for next.
I need a 4x4 (snow in winter) with towing ability (caravan), my current Freelander 2 is perfect but getting on a bit in years 12, with 143000 miles. I'd like to change to something a bit younger.
I'm wary of euro6 diesels with their fragility around emissions equipment dpf, egr, ad blue etc. Don't want anything wet belt.
Veering towards a Subaru Outback 2.5 petrol but, cvt transmission....

I have some friends, who live in the back of beyond, up a big hill on a small farm, drives about a mile long and would be better suited to being sherpa Tenzing. They use an xc60 awd with winter tyres for everything else, often tow trailers too, at a guess upto 2 ton. They say its the best all round car they've ever had.

That’s pretty poor, that would have lasted one of my guys less than three months. You can slate land rovers but he racks up 1500 miles a week in a snotty old Freelander1, aside of a solenoid change in the gearbox a couple of months ago ( done in situ) it’s not had a spanner on it in two years.

380,000 miles trouble free, apart from the rustYet the way everyone goes on you'd think that every vehicle before the wet belt had been 100% reliable and gone on to do a million miles of trouble free motoring.

Sadly their new pick up isnt coming to the uk.

when we were looking for a replacement pickup a few yers ago we tried all of them.
Although we did not purchase one , the vehicle that impressed the most was the Sang Yong Musso (now KGM)
seemed to have the largest cab and bed, drove and towed well ( on road use only). worth a look.

I had a 2.0L one in red. Loved that car and used it to go racing towing a trailer fully loaded in the back. Beautiful smooth drive.

I don't know what I would buy for a pickup truck now...? I have had nothing in my workshop for about 5 years - I would spend my hard earned money on.

Yes, much easier. Removing the body isn't actually bad to do, and once you've done a couple it's fairly quick.
When only changing the belt we pull the steering rack and hub and driveshaft from the offside in order to get the sump off. It's a pain, which is why many forego it.
Much easier. You can replace the engine with the body on but it's far more awkward.
The 3.2s are known for leaking EGR coolers which wrap around the back of the head. It's easier to pull the gearbox and do it from the bottom that struggling to do it from the top.
I do stuff the easy way now, no point in struggling.

I had a 2024 Ranger followed by a 2025 Amarok - both the same vehicle! I had them on long term hire so didn't care. They were pretty good but certainly no LandRover! Leaf springs. Drums on the back. Part time 4x4 on the first one. Land Rover ditched that in 1984

I've heard that myth with the 2.0s, that you can't let them drain for too long.
3.2s seem to die from injectors failing and cooking pistons, like the 2.2s.
My mate has a 3.2 and it's... underwhelming.
I think my 2.1 Sprinter has more balls and tows easier.
I have NEVER had an engine failure. I do big mileage - drive VERY hard and skimp on servicing.Yet the way everyone goes on you'd think that every vehicle before the wet belt had been 100% reliable and gone on to do a million miles of trouble free motoring.
Never needed a chain change or even an adjuster replacement

Rover SD1 2.6 - 120,000 miles - written off
Rover SD1 V8 Vitesse - 150,000 miles - sold
Alfa 75 2L twin spark - 180,000 miles - stored
Rover 400 diesel L series - 195,000 miles on original timing belt - sold
110 county station wagon V8 - 170,000 - dismantled
Discovery 300tdi - 110,000 miles - stored
Range Rover Classic - only 43,000 miles -stored
Not that many cars in over 40 years of motoring. All the rest been on hire or lease so never had long enough to cause real problems.

Unless it's a Lancia 037 i absolutely don't want to own an Italian vehicle.
