My mate's 2024 ford rangers engine went bang two weeks ago it had only done 8000miles. Ford obviously did the work under warranty a complete new engine fitted caused by wet belt failure. The service manager told him they do at least one a week. How have modern vehicles got so bad.

Although you can't really blame emissions for Ford deciding to go with a wet belt. More likely the bean counters being in charge.
Emissions, thin oil and extended oil change intervals all play their part but a new engine only lasting 8000 miles is pretty staggering!

Failure at that low a mileage is usually down to a manufacturing defect.

It'll likely be something in the valve train has failed, which has resulted in the belt stripping, however Ford's warranty approach to belt failure now, is if the belt has failed, you fit a complete new engine.
It used to be you had to follow the standard "most economic" repair (which is common policy to most manufacturers), which meant cylinder head removal for a full diagnostic, however they changed it to as soon as you confirm the belt has failed, you fit a complete engine.

It's taken them a while to get the old Pinto production line up and running again but it's working now...

I bought a second hand one with about 40K miles on the clock. Ideal vehicle and it 'had/has' the tax benefits of buying and running it through a business.

I got the belt changed and genuine oil put in to be on the safe side. The garage I took it (small rurally type - so lots of people have them) said he does 5 a week.

Perfect vehicle for me, just a shame they are potentially ticking time bombs.

Just traded mine in, I had mid 40k on the clock, decided to make the wet belt somebody else's problem. Now I'm retired, most of my journeys are short so not ideal with a diesel. I wasn't towing much either. Loved the truck, but replaced it with an EV, my neighbour has a Disco 3 if I need to tow something. I'm loving driving something that has a decent turning circle and handling

I watched a YouTube video of wet belt replacement on the Ranger. Not a trivial exercise by the looks of it.

Im due a new pick up soon my Mitsi is 5 in a few months….if you start looking into pickups in general they all seem to be ticking time bombs one way or another. Ford and vw belts, Toyotas seem to have a chassis rust problem at 7 years or so. Isuzu are pants, etc etc
Maybe I should buy a Landrover for trouble free motoring!

Well, my Td5 ‘fender has never let me down since I bought it in 2008.

That said, owning a Disco 3 & 4 was pretty much a full-time job. Like a drug addict, I still crave another one, but I know even just a little taste, and my life will be consumed by it again. Two months down the line, I’ll end up sitting in another dead Disco, in the rain, a sad violin playing in the minor key: Limp Mode Again (feat. GAPIID and body-off job).

My Shogun is 20 years old and has just had it's first welding done. It's registered as a van so is cheap to insure and tax.
I don't do much more than 3k a year so it will probably outlast me

We have had two Hilux’s with rotten chassis, both had signs at their first Mots! I wouldn’t know which pickup to buy nowadays. My Hilux has terrible MPG, 17, which is worse than my Ranger.

We do loads, and plenty of engine replacements too.

Part of the issue with the Ranger is removing the sump is so much more involved than in a Transit, so often the sump isn't removed and the oil pump belt isn't changed, nor the pickup cleaned.

Yet the way everyone goes on you'd think that every vehicle before the wet belt had been 100% reliable and gone on to do a million miles of trouble free motoring.

I was servicing some robots at Dagenham in the 80's and was telling the engineer about the Essex engine I had bought to drop into my Lightweight, he gave me a steel gear out of the Cologne engine and said "you'll need this"
