Sounds like a peach. My friend who gave me the car owns another mk 3 escort, a ghia 1.6. The shell is a lot better so he couldn't justify keeping the 3i.
Took off some of the outer sill. A pipe is sticking out and leaking and I am unsure what it is :/

Exposed some hidden surface rust.

No axle stands left at the shop so need to wait until Monday. Due to get angle grinder and hopefully remove fuel tank on Sunday.
Checked areas underneath the back of car and the chassis still seems solid with the screwdriver test, a bit of surface rust but nothing major from what I can see.
When you start out with a rotten Mk3 Escort, its almost certain welding will will needed every year for MOT. Cost wise to restore one of these to a reasonable standard is going to cost you at least £1k without paint, if you are starting from scratch and need to buy tools and equipment.
This type of thing isnt really worth doing unless you dont mind the cost of the project working out substantially more than the final value. Bodge job to get an MOT is likely to cost a lot less, but the value of the car will then be a lot less to anyone who knows what they are looking at.
For anyone wanting to learn how to weld, getting hold of an MOT failure, with a list of what needs doing, is far better idea than a rotten shell needing large amounts of work and money spending.
Hi Staunton, welcome to the forum.
You might like to check the date of the last post before yours as you probably wont get a reply from escortmk3project as he hasn't visited the forum since 08.09.11!
Cheers, Henry.
