Ive mentioned before the hazards of using magnets near your lathe. Fine if you have a de-magnetiser but damned annoying when your tools all start collecting swarf.

BTW before I had a proper de-magnetiser Inused to use an old 110v yellow box site transformer. Just plug it in and drag the part across the lid. The AC field would remove a lot of the magnetism from the part. Not as good as a proper one but good enough to stop you going mad. Might work better using the base as it’s usually closer to the windings.

As im mostly only doing floor clean up, my concern is the continued operation will magnetize the "sheath" of the device itself.

I think the handle (which is the bit that stops the magnet comming out the end) is molded on somehow, so demagnetizing the whole thing would not really work.


I mean, for the £6, or whatever it cost, its kind of a moot point, but i just know that, with these things, they start to become irritating, and you just continue using them whilst they become more and more tiresome.

It will probably last some time though - its not like i have that many rivet tails to pick up!

(im limiting myself now from ranting about how they get under machine castors and stop things rolling - they really do irritate me, and you never end up getting them all in the bin, or have the discipline to find the bin, etc)
