Probably the same stuff goes into it as with any other scrap metal place in the world. The cooking is what counts not the ingredients

years ago in another life I had an irate customer complaining of rust on his car and pointing out that it had only done a few miles. My comment was that it had already done 1/2 million miles on the front of a Chevvy before being recycled and fitted to his car. I did relent and authorised a replacement. Got the impression he didn't get the joke.

I for one really enjoyed watching that video.

You can poke holes in their process as much as you want, but nothing is fundamentally wrong with it. The pour, itself, looked pretty decent, at least the casting that came out was all in one piece and looked like it machined ok.
And they are making great whopping slow moving gears that would cost tens of thousands to make over here. If you could even get them made at all.

I have a lot of respect for those guys. How many of us could even start to produce that with so little "specialised " kit ? Let alone in those surrounding with only safety sandals for protection. Good luck to them !!

Im going to assume the bigger the gear is, the less important it becomes particually if oversized for the task and given enough clearance. Perhaps if it were a precision gear train then it could be half the size.

That was one slow pour, not ideal, I dont know if slag and oxides easily float to the top as Ive heard that steel casting is like syrup.

Don’t know about slag and oxides, but a fair amount of castable ended up falling into the ladle..

Windmills worked with wooden gears carved by hand, but at relatively slow speeds. It's horses for courses, you'd not make gears that way for for instance for the output gear chain from a gas turbine, but perhaps to keep a rolling mill working it would be OK.

Many a lathes back gear has been welded up and hand filed, and for the duty it serves it's fine.

Something I saw that really impressed me years ago, as a teen machine shop apprentice at the time, was a huge apple cider press down Somerset way. It was apparently 200 years old and the main screw had an acme form thread about 16" diameter, carved by hand, which was impressive. But how they carved the internal thread to match was what flummoxed me.

It had been in operation almost permanently since it was built, according to the guy operating it, but had been used mainly for display purposes for many years.

I remember when they turned the blast furnace off up our way. they payed a load of old "retirees" handsomely as non of the new guys had a clue how to shut it down apparently. i think it was the largest in europe at the time.

the beam mill is still here. but no furnace. all of the iron out of eston is long gone. it was more financially viable logistically shutting it down.
